Van Abbe museum café interior For the renovated café at the Van Abbemuseum, Daphna Laurens designed an interior that builds on the museum’s layered architecture. The design adds a new layer without erasing the existing qualities of the space. The café sits at the threshold between the museum, the city and the Dommel River. This connection between interior and exterior forms an important starting point. The new brick-red floor creates a visual connection with the historic building. Colour and material give the café a warm and distinctive identity. Soft curtains reinforce the colour palette and filter the daylight entering through the tall windows. Furniture, flooring, textiles and the existing architecture come together in an interior designed to invite people to stay. The result is a contemporary space that responds to the history of the Van Abbemuseum while establishing a character of its own: open, warm and connected to its surroundings. At the Van Abbemuseum, the museum café has been given a brand-new, colorful makeover. Thanks to Eindhoven-based design duo Daphna Laurens, it fits perfectly with the image of a leading museum for contemporary art. To blend the museum with the café, Eindhoven design studio Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe extended the design all the way to the entrance and revamped the check-in desk. On the Van Abbe Cafés menu, you'll find lunch dishes, coffee with baked goods, and everything you need for an afternoon drink. Sun’s shining bright? Some cities preserve their past behind glass. Eindhoven prefers to recycle it. A country estate once reserved for one powerful family now welcomes visitors. Factory districts became creative laboratories. An old power complex became a place to meet friends. The city repeatedly turns closed worlds into public ones. That pattern appears everywhere. At Woensel-West, a neighbourhood known for problems gradually became known for possibility. At Victoriapark, new buildings stand on ground shaped by industry. Even De Blob represents a city willing to disrupt its own appearance. The interesting thing about Eindhoven is that its identity was never fixed. Technology built its reputation, but adaptation built the city itself. Perhaps that is why places like the Evoluon still feel relevant. It was designed as a symbol of the future, yet today it mainly reminds us how quickly visions of tomorrow become history. Meanwhile, the most revealing place may be Landgoed De Wielewaal. For decades it represented separation: industry leaders behind gates, workers beyond them. Now those gates are opening. One sentence follows you across Eindhoven: every ending here seems to become raw material for something else. And then… where to eat, I would suggest Bergstraat and surroundings, VDMA terrein, Woensel West or even Vaderland if you are prepared to bike a little distance out of town! Een fantastische start, gevierd met zovelen van jullie uit Eindhoven en ver daarbuiten! 💫 Verspreid over 11+7 zalen zie je de nieuwe collectiepresentatie en het gebouw als een levend sterrenstelsel van verhalen, perspectieven en verbindingen. De transformatie omvat ook een volledig vernieuwde begane grond—Dommelplein—met solopresentaties van Sarkis en @minoliti, speciale ruimtes voor @designacademyeindhoven met @vervoz, en System Thinkers, een initiatief dat kunstenaars verankert in de kern het museum. It was a stellar beginning, celebrated with so many of you from Eindhoven and beyond. 💫 Spanning 11+7 galleries, this new presentation sees both our collection and our building as a living constellation of stories, perspectives, and connections. The transformation also includes a reimagined ground floor—Dommelplein—with solo presentations beginning with Sarkis and Ad Minoliti, dedicated spaces for Design Academy Eindhoven with Merve Bedir, and System Thinkers, a museum-wide initiative embedding artists into the conceptual core of the institution. The inaugural cohort includes Ayoung Kim, john gerrard, Ayumi Paul, Kate Crawford, Vladan Joler, and Adeziv. The revamp also includes a redesigned reception area with interventions by Dan Perjovschi and a new café by Daphna Laurens. A photo from a while back ….but it shows what the Navigators are all about….. Unexpected meetings, a connection with Eindhoven’s past and a firm basis in Eindhoven now and helping newcomers and residents find their way in a changing city. So what will we be doing this weekend? Firstly, visiting the opening of @vanabbemuseum and @vanabbecafe . We’re looking forward to seeing the new and more city orientated ground floor and will definitely keep you posted. Then on to @vanpiereboeken to attend the book signing “Het Oranjeshirt” @renevandekerkhof . We’ll also try to say hello @hetkoekemannetje , if the Tik Tok queue is shorter. There’s a Boek Startdag @bibliotheekeindhoven for pre-schoolers and in the Philips van Lennep park the Local Heroes festival as well as @muziekcathrien on Saturday and music @fifthnre on Sunday. This week in Eindhoven, the Van Abbemuseum reopens its doors for public access, while the Van Moll hosts a Finnish tap takeover, highlighting the city’s evolving cultural and technical landscape. Plus a lot of music, dancing and partying. Institutional Renewal The Van Abbemuseum reopens with a refreshed curation. Entry is free, though advance reservations are required. Also this week, Van Moll hosts a Finnish brewery for a tap takeover, that I really want to attend. what are your plans for the coming week?
