I have a habit of recording my rehearsals, not because I intend to post them, but because I want to review my own conducting, reflect on what I could do better, and hopefully become a better musician. 🎶

But sometimes, a rehearsal reminds me why I love what I do.

This was a really good rehearsal. Not because we sounded perfect, but because I could hear the progress.

The singers had clearly been practising over the past few weeks. They were willing to experiment with me, make adjustments, and step outside their comfort zones.

Most importantly, they showed a genuine commitment to making the music better.

As a conductor, there is something incredibly rewarding about working with people who are willing to learn, grow, and pursue excellence together. It reminds me that making music is not just about the notes we sing today, but about all the little steps we take to get there.

It has only been five weeks of rehearsals, and I am already so encouraged by what we are building together. I can’t wait to see what a few more weeks of hard work will bring! ❤️🎶

Come hear the results of our musical journey at The Lost Birds, featuring music by Christopher Tin, Andrew Balfour, Iman Habibi, and Sarah Quartel.

🕊️ What can a bird teach us about home, migration, and belonging?

Written for the Marbled Murrelet, a small and endangered seabird of the Pacific Northwest, Marble of the West draws inspiration from these mysterious birds that spend their days at sea and return to old-growth forests to nest.

The piece weaves together images of the Pacific Northwest, such as old-growth forests, migrating birds, and the places we call home, with a deeply personal story of immigration and displacement. In Habibi’s @iman.habibi.composer words, the Marbled Murrelet became a powerful connection to his own experience of leaving one home and searching for another.

🌲🕊️ “Marble of the West, my old-growth nest,
I am you, we are one.”

This beautiful work by Iman Habibi will be featured as part of Christopher Tin’s The Lost Birds.

Some birds are gone forever. Others are disappearing before our eyes. 🕊️
Come listen. Come remember. And perhaps, leave with a deeper appreciation for the world around us. 🌿🕊️

When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me. 🕊️

Christina Rossetti’s poem When I Am Dead, My Dearest offers a tender reflection on death, memory, and letting go. There is comfort in its simplicity: remember me if you wish, forget me if you must.

In Christopher Tin’s The Lost Birds, these words become music, quiet, haunting, and deeply human.

Join the Vancouver Bach Choir @vanbachchoirs on November 14, 2026, 7:30pm at St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church for an unforgettable performance of The Lost Birds.

🎶 Come listen to the words, the music, and everything that lingers between them.
