Joining us for Christopher Tin’s The Lost Birds on November 14th, meet the Microcosmos Quartet! ✨

Microcosmos was formed in Vancouver in the spring of 2010 to perform the rich repertoire of string quartets written in the past 100 years. The quartet takes advantage of the compactness and portability of a string quartet - four chairs and adequate light are all that is required - to present some of the greatest music of the 20th and 21st centuries in intimate spaces and sometimes unusual venues such as private homes, clubs, small halls, public and commercial buildings, for an audience that can experience the music close at hand.

The six quartets of Béla Bartók form the core of the quartet’s repertoire, complemented by important related works, including those by Canadian composers. Aside from the quartet’s intimate ‘house’ concerts, they have been guests on other series including a performance of Benjamin Britten’s three quartets, celebrating his centennial in 2013 for Music on Main’s lauded ‘Cellar’ series, the premiere of eleven works for quartet as ensemble-in-residence for Vancouver Pro Musica’s ‘Further’ Series in 2015, and ‘Speaking in Ligeti’, an interdisciplinary collaboration with MMHop Productions and four dancers that toured to Halifax and Ottawa.

In 2015 the quartet launched the Kessler Academy, an annual educational initiative featuring a conductor-less orchestra mentorship program led by the quartet members.

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour the survivors of residential schools, the children who never came home, and their families and communities.

The Vancouver Bach Family of Choirs gathers and makes music on the unceded, stolen lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Acknowledgement is a starting point, and we are committed to continued listening, learning, and action. by @vanbachchoirs

Back in May, Mother/Land finally came to life!

On May 16 at the Vancouver Playhouse, the Vancouver Bach Choir gave the world premiere of Jeffrey Ryan and Michael Lewis MacLennan’s opera-oratorio. It’s the story of Ruth and Naomi, two women who build a new life in a place that doesn’t welcome them, and it feels as relevant today as ever.

Thank you to Maestro Leslie Dala, to soloists Heidi Duncan, Krisztina Szabó, Simran Claire, and Luka Kawabata, and to our singers and instrumentalists. Above all, thank you to everyone who came to be part of a brand-new piece of Canadian music.

The Lost Birds is a moving musical journey inspired by endangered and extinct bird species, inviting us to pause and reflect on our relationship with the natural world, and what we stand to lose when we stop listening.

Featuring music by Christopher Tin, Andrew Balfour, Iman Habibi, and Sarah Quartel, this program brings together powerful stories, poetry, and music to honour the beauty of the natural world and the fragile lives that inhabit it.

Come listen. Come remember. And perhaps, leave with a deeper appreciation for the world around us. 🌿🕊️
