During the first edition of the Music & Crafts Weekend, guests got to learn how to weave baskets using palm leaves. Basket weaving is a traditional art in Kenya’s coastal region, where weavers use local materials to create unique baskets. The process involves rolling, dyeing, and weaving fibers into shapes.
Materials
Sisal: A hardy grass that grows well in arid conditions
Palm leaves: A local indigenous palm called Magangachi grows on Sagalla hill
Banana leaf fibers: A local material used to weave baskets

They then added beautiful floral arrangements and fresh fruit to the baskets. These art practice are a significant part of Kenyan and Coastal culture and part of our goal is to recognize and celebrate this during the festival.

Basket weaving is a source of income for artisans and their families.
The baskets are a reflection of the cultural identity, spiritual beliefs, and connection to ancestors of the people who weave them.
The baskets are traditionally given as gifts, such as at weddings and ceremonies.

The session was lead by Sammy, who is a talented Landscaper and Gardener as well. Basket bag modeled by @vanessapym

‘You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.’ It’s with a heavy heart that yesterday, these two fierce supporters of @kenyalax lost their mother, wife, best friend, angel, role model, partner in crime and so much more.
Some of us were lucky enough to meet Patty in June and words cannot do her justice. When she was having a really rough ride in August, she still selflessly insisted that @papastrain and @joseph_strain still jointed the trip to Kenya and support our dream. This says everything 💖. #Love #Thoughts #Prayers #TeamStrain #PlayForPatty #PFP #PrincessPatty #watchingfromabove👼 #guardianangel #onenation #onepatty #kenyalacrosse 💔🖤💚
