🚂 46 years later… the Nyahururu Safari Train is back!

If you’ve been looking for a different way to explore Kenya, this is one to add to the list. The revived railway takes you from Nairobi through Gilgil and Ol Kalou to Nyahururu… with plenty of countryside, highland and Rift Valley scenery along the way.

But here’s the thing: this is NOT the journey to take if you’re in a hurry.

The train is slow, but that’s honestly part of the charm. Put your phone away (occasionally!), sit by the window, watch Kenya roll by and enjoy the journey rather than rushing to the destination.

I’ve put together a little helpful info - routes, schedules, fares, what’s on board, what you’ll see and my honest take - so SAVE this for your next trip. 🚂🇰🇪

Sometimes burnout doesn’t look dramatic… it just feels like constantly being tired, distracted, and a little disconnected 🌿

We live in a world that moves fast, always on, always consuming, always chasing the next thing. But we weren’t designed to live like that all the time. We need spaces that allow us to slow down, reset, and just BE.

And rest isn’t just sleep.
It’s eating well.
It’s long, unhurried walks.
It’s moving your body and feeling good in it.
It’s doing things you actually enjoy.
It’s meaningful conversations.
It’s quiet moments.
It’s time with animals.
It’s traveling with people who make you feel like yourself again.

If the city has been feeling like too much, these are some of my favorite nearby escapes to recharge, each offering a different kind of rest:

• Wild by Lera (Sleeping Warrior, Lake Elementaita): Off-grid, quiet, and beautifully curated. A space that gently allows you to slow down and reconnect. @the_curious_builder has done an amazing job!

• Faru House (Lake Nakuru): Luxurious, and incredibly peaceful with views into Lake Nakuru park. I once spotted a rhino while sitting in living room!

• Eagles Point Camp (Lake Elementaita): Warm, earthy, and full of character… it feels like home. And I can carry my dogs along 🥹

• Kembu Cottages (Njoro): Set on a historic farm with wide open spaces, fresh air, and simple, wholesome comfort. And if you slow down and take your time to walk around you’ll spot a few chameleons and other wonderful creatures.

Eh you guys, I’ve really missed a good karaoke night. 🎤🕺

So when we heard about the rooftop karaoke at Ole-Ken Hotel, we couldn’t wait to go! @atienodiana @jaytruth4

The setup was such a vibe… the rooftop covered in lights, good music playing in the background, and cocktails and mocktails being prepared for us while we settled in. 🍹✨ DJ Lemsky kept the music going before we started, we got in some choreo lead by Dee and then our host for the evening, Kendy Joy, arrived and helped us pick our songs.

And what started with 90s R&B quickly turned into a journey through the 2000s, High School Musical, rock, rap… honestly, by the end of the night I think we had covered almost every genre. Almost. 😂

The best part? There’s absolutely no judgement. You can sing your heart out, dance, miss a few notes, completely commit to the performance and just have fun. Everyone is a main character. 😁🎤

And apparently we’re not done because we’re heading back for a karaoke battle. We have a bet to finish. 👀😂

Karaoke happens every Friday at Ole-Ken Hotel from around 6:30/7PM, so grab your friends and go have your main character moment.

And if karaoke isn’t your thing, Ole-Ken has other nights too… Game Nights on Thursdays including Triangle Chess, We’re Not Really Strangers, What Do You Meme, Poker, Jenga and more… and a live DJ on Saturdays.
