This week, CAN-TF1 Vancouver welcomed California Task Force Canine teams from Sacramento, Oakland, and Los Angeles. This was the first time for California USAR teams training in Vancouver.

It was an excellent opportunity for training and for strengthening our relationship with our neighbors to the south who share the same passion for search and rescue dogs.

My great grandfather was a member of the VFD from 1916 until his death in 1950. I bet this day on Bowen Island was so much fun! A wonderful day spent with family & friends! 😊

Do you use lithium-ion batteries? Power up safely! ⁣
⁣
As Fire Prevention Week wraps up, we’re sharing some safety tips from @VanFireRescue for safely charging lithium-ion batteries. ⁣
⁣
Save and share these tips to help keep your home and community safe year-round:⁣
⁣
✅ Buy devices listed by a qualified testing laboratory (Look for the UL mark for Underwriters Laboratory) ⁣
📖 Always follow manufacturer’s instructions ⁣
🔌 Only use the charging cord that came with the device ⁣
🛏️ Never charge a device under your pillow, on your bed, or under your couch ⁣
🔋 Keep batteries at room temperature ⁣
🔥 Store batteries away from anything that can catch fire ⁣
🚫 Never alter batteries to enhance their performance ⁣
⁣
💡Not sure what a lithium-ion battery is? They power many everyday devices, including phones, laptops, e-bikes and power tools.⁣

Uniformity is part of the fire service.

How one leaves their boots, hangs their jacket, sets their straps on their SCBA, how you hang your mask off your pack - it all saves time.

In this profession - time can save lives.

It is also a reflection of how much one cares and the love they put into their job.

When you are starting out - it matters. When you are 30 years on, it still matters.

Joining Vancouver Canucks alumni tonight for hockey, teamwork, and a great cause are five VPD officers, five Vancouver Fire Rescue members, and six Goldeneye players from the Professional Women’s Hockey League.

We’re proud to lace up alongside our first responder and hockey community teammates to help support the Canucks for Kids Fund.

Good luck to all the players tonight!

I’m proud to be a strong advocate for our brave Vancouver firefighters and other first responders who keep Vancouver safe, every day.

Public safety is a top priority for me personally - I strongly believe that a healthy and vibrant city also needs to be a safe city.

Our Mayor and Council have fully funded the Vancouver Fire and Rescue service for the first time in many years, and have made unprecedented investments in PFAS-free gear for our firefighters to reduce their cancer risk, a first of its kind initiative in North America.

When I began my time on council, I had no idea that the gear our brave firefighters suit up in every day was literally causing occupational cancer - the leading cause of firefighter fatalities in Canada. I’m proud to be part of a council that is taking this issue seriously. Firefighters have enough to deal with in responding to emergencies - what they wear to work shouldn’t be putting their health at risk as well.
