Our firefighters moved a SkyTrain! 🚒🚆⁣
 ⁣
But the real story is WHY?⁣
 ⁣
VFRS crews train for much more than fires. Complex emergencies can require specialized skills and close coordination between responding agencies. Training together develops that experience before an emergency happens. Working with @translink, crews recently took part in an exercise involving a SkyTrain car, giving firefighters hands-on experience with the systems and challenges they could encounter during an emergency.⁣
 ⁣
Training. Preparation. Partnerships.⁣
 ⁣
It’s how we keep building a safer Vancouver.⁣

Do you use lithium-ion batteries? Power up safely! ⁣
⁣
As Fire Prevention Week wraps up, we’re sharing some safety tips from @VanFireRescue for safely charging lithium-ion batteries. ⁣
⁣
Save and share these tips to help keep your home and community safe year-round:⁣
⁣
✅ Buy devices listed by a qualified testing laboratory (Look for the UL mark for Underwriters Laboratory) ⁣
📖 Always follow manufacturer’s instructions ⁣
🔌 Only use the charging cord that came with the device ⁣
🛏️ Never charge a device under your pillow, on your bed, or under your couch ⁣
🔋 Keep batteries at room temperature ⁣
🔥 Store batteries away from anything that can catch fire ⁣
🚫 Never alter batteries to enhance their performance ⁣
⁣
💡Not sure what a lithium-ion battery is? They power many everyday devices, including phones, laptops, e-bikes and power tools.⁣

🚫🔋🛏️Fire Prevention Week tip #5: Soft surface? Hard pass. ⁣
⁣
Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk or floor. Beds, couches and pillows can trap heat and block airflow, which can cause a battery to overheat. ⁣

👀 Fire Prevention Week tip #4: Cheap charger? Don’t chance it. ⁣
⁣
Use the cord and charger that came with your device or ones approved by the manufacturer. Using the wrong charger can damage the battery and increase the risk of fire. ⁣

🌡️ Fire Prevention Week tip #3: Feels hot? Stop using it. ⁣
⁣
Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire. ⁣

🔋Fire Prevention Week Tip #2: Fully charged? Time to unplug. ⁣
⁣
Unplug your device when it is fully charged. Leaving it plugged in longer than needed can increase heat and stress on the battery. ⁣
⁣
Fire Prevention Week 2026 is focused on everyday habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires to keep our communities safer. ⁣

⚡We’re teaming up with @nfpadotorg to promote Fire Prevention Week™ October 4 -10. ⁣
⁣
The theme for Fire Prevention Week 2026 is: ⁣
⁣
Charge Into Fire Safety™. Safe Charging is a Superpower! ⁣
⁣
Learn everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep homes and communities safer. ⁣
⁣
🔌First tip of the week: For tools and rides, charge outside. ⁣
⁣
Charge large items like e-bikes, e-scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they fail. ⁣

❤️ A new record: $50,000 for ALS BC!⁣
 ⁣
@vanfirecharities have done it again. This year’s ALS Shoot for the Cure raised an incredible $50,000 for the ALS Society of BC, setting a new fundraising record.⁣
 ⁣
This cause has a long history with Vancouver firefighters, who have supported @als_bc through this partnership for more than 20 years.⁣
 ⁣
“The tireless work put on by Vancouver Firefighter Charities to benefit the ALS Community in BC is simply incredible. The generosity they garner from not only firefighters themselves, but the hundreds who stepped up to support them speaks volumes to who they are,” said Donald Miyazaki, Executive Director of ALS BC.⁣
 ⁣
👏 A huge thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered and supported this year’s fundraiser. What an amazing way to give back to our community.⁣

As we approach the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we're sharing the story of new VFRS recruit Borrelli, who graduated from training this spring after participating in the First Nations Firefighter Development Program in partnership with @fnessbc.⁣
⁣
"The idea of helping somebody when they're going through some tough times or on their worst day gives me a lot of purpose and a lot of gratitude to be in the position to help somebody. Especially being in a place like Vancouver that has such diversity and such a large array of calls, I feel like I can fulfill my best purpose of helping individuals in need."⁣
⁣
We're proud to have Probationer Borrelli on our team and grateful for programs that help build a more diverse and inclusive fire service.⁣

Every firefighter knows that behind every badge is a family, a hall and a community.⁣
 ⁣
This week, the fire service family gathered for the 40th annual @iaffofficial Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial in Colorado Springs, a place of remembrance for those who gave their lives in service to others and for the loved ones who continue to carry their memory forward. ⁣
 ⁣
We remember those who never came home after answering the call. We honour their courage, their sacrifice and the families, friends and colleagues who continue to carry their legacy.⁣
 ⁣
They are not forgotten.⁣
 ⁣
❤️🖤⁣
