A little cheese shop with SO much to offer!

@vanhookcheese in Jersey City is a specialty shop dedicated to artisan cheeses from near and far, with everything from familiar favorites to varieties you’ve probably never heard of. The staff really knows their cheese and is happy to help you discover something new!

Beyond the cheese counter, you’ll find cured meats, crackers, jams, spreads, olives and all sorts of specialty pantry items. They also put together beautiful cheese and charcuterie boards, making it a great stop when you’re hosting, bringing something to a gathering or just treating yourself.

I love specialty shops like this, where you can take your time, ask questions and learn a little about what you’re buying. ❤️

I’ve been really excited about this new series I’ll be doing called Classic Pairings. Instead of sharing my own review of a classic novel, I’ll share a cheese, meat, and jam that I feel pairs well with the story! My first classic is The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. I knew my pairings had to be decadent and indulgent. Luckily, I work part time as a cheesemonger at Van Hook Cheese & Grocery in Downtown Jersey City and can find tons of options for this Dorian Gray inspired spread.

Secret de Lys is a buttery silky cow’s milk cheese from France that can be heated up right in the crock it comes in or just brought to room temperature to dip a baguette in. For the jam I chose Berkshire Wine Jelly’s Shiraz which has a luscious blackberry flavor with a hint of basil (it was really too perfect for this pairing!). The meat I chose is Salami Etna, a rich and savory pork salami that features a nutty crunch of whole pistachios, garlic, and fresh lemon zest. I added some dried pajarero figs, not just for the symbolism, but for their honey-like sweetness as well. It all tasted sinfully delicious and I think both Dorian and Lord Henry Wotton would approve!

A recent @vanhookcheese haul (not from today despite what I say in the video). I got inspired by some of their lonely ends, one of my favorite things they do, and it all went from there! Don't get me wrong, the cheese is fantastic, but I love that there's always more to explore as well.
