100 years young and still lighting up our world! Celebrating Dick Van Dyke’s incredible century with a throwback to one of my absolute favorite sessions with him and his lovely wife Arlene, some of which made it into People Magazine.
In these tough times, it’s even more important to honor lives like his, filled with joy, laughter, and a little bit of magic. Even when the world feels dark, let’s celebrate the bright lights who remind us what resilience and joy look like. Cheers to Dick and all the smiles he’s given us over the years! Quick gear shoutout: shot on the Canon 5D mkIII S (50MP magic!) with a Canon 24-105mm f/4 lens, lit up using @elinchrom_ltd Elinchrom Quadra Rangers plus the Style 400 BX and a mix of Elinchrom modifiers. @fujifilmx_us Fuji LUTs for that perfect color grading, and Capture One for a smooth workflow. Just a little BTS love for my fellow gearheads!

Happiest 100th Birthday @official_dick_van_dyke ! 🎉

“You know, I don’t understand hate. I never did. It just seems like such a waste of energy,” 99 and 11 mos-yr-old Dick Van Dyke said to those of us gathered over recent weekends at his longtime home - known as Vandy Manor - which he shares with his beloved wife, Arlene. And their cutest pup, Bootsy Poppins.

“I think that’s why I’ve lasted so long. I really have no hate in me. I have no room for it!”

These have been extraordinary events - one in the very courtyard where he filmed his video with @coldplay - helping to raise money to support the arts and a future DVD museum.

One important feature of the afternoons - no phones allowed. “I think that’s the problem with the world, we’re so busy with our screens, we’re not listening to each other.”

Tea and treats are served. Mary Poppins would be proud.

Then questions are asked and answered - I asked how he still had his hair at 99! He let out a good laugh and replied looking back at me, “Some of my best friends are bald!” Ha!

Of course, I followed up with my serious question, asking about his memories working with the famed songwriting duo, The Sherman Brothers, who wrote all the songs for “Mary Poppins” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.” - “I loved working with them! They made it so easy and fun. I think my favorite song was “You Two.”

And at any moment, joined by his vocal group, The Vantastix, songs are sung. To hear him sing “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” in person! Omg! To hear him sing “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” to his great-granddaughter (who delivers him the red balloons in the Coldplay video) by his side! OMG!

But what stands out most is the love he shares with his wife, family and friends. And Everyone around him!

And the hope and joy he has in his heart for life and living. And the world. ““Anger ages you. Laughter keeps you young.”
