Now come with me through the looking glass. 🔬🔍🔭👀🪩 Mind-bending #maquette by the unbeatable @mulvanyandrogers team of the jewelbox that is Leighton House @leightonsambournemuseums PLUS PLUS PLUS tiny watercolour details of Aitchison’s 1877 #architectural presentation #drawings (on loan from @riba ) of the same spaces in the perfect downstairs exhibition at Leighton House by @melgib1 on the formation of the Arab Hall. I cannot recommend her book on this composite period room more highly. For the tiny house, those interior furnishings, fittings, tilework, mosaic, artworks, objects (including the 🦚) are all handmade and perfect to the nth degree. Hurray for human craftsmanship, human scale and the human experience of seeing something in 3D (as opposed to a phone screen). The miniature house is on loan to the lifesize Leighton House literally this week only, it was commissioned by a private Qatari patron with a real eye for detail. Best possible person to see this with: @vasemadness of course (added here for scale) 💙🩵💙 #smallbutclose #bigbutfaraway 🐄🐄

I crossed half of Paris to make my way to the Palace of Versailles—just to catch a glimpse of that Yuan dynasty qingbai porcelain vase I first encountered in textbooks.
Thanks to @vasemadness that make me aware of this exhibition and its display at @chateauversailles.

In itself, it is not a masterpiece of Yuan porcelain. Yet it holds a far greater distinction: it is the earliest documented piece of Chinese porcelain known to have reached Europe—the famous Fonthill Vase. And displayed alongside it, the extraordinary 1713 watercolor record made specifically to document it.

The vase had already arrived in Europe by the late Yuan period, entering the Hungarian royal court. At the time, Europeans regarded porcelain as a rare and wondrous treasure. Before long, it was mounted with silver fittings and transformed into a ewer—an Eastern object reshaped to suit Western use.

It later passed into the collection of the Grand Dauphin, the son and heir of the Sun King, Louis XIV. In 1713, it was carefully recorded in watercolor, preserving both its form and its elaborate mounts.

After the French Revolution, it was acquired by the English collector William Beckford and displayed at Fonthill Abbey. By then, however, much of its earlier history had been forgotten. When the Fonthill collection was dispersed at auction, the vase was described simply as “a very ancient Chinese porcelain.”

In 1882, it was purchased by the National Museum of Ireland for only about £26.

It was not until 1959 that a curator in Ireland painstakingly reconstructed its provenance. Only then did its nearly six-century-long collecting history regain the scholarly attention it deserved, eventually earning a place in global history studies of Chinese export porcelain.

The current exhibition at Versailles focuses on the Grand Dauphin—his life, his collections, and the prince who never became king, having died of smallpox before ascending the throne. This vase was one of the remarkable treasures in his celebrated cabinet of curiosities.

And, the exhibition ends this Sunday.

Fun night last night with Nette @bonhams1793 Julian @maisonmargauxltd and Patricia @vasemadness talking about The Art of The Table for Bonhams upcoming ceramic and decorative auctions. Maison Margaux decorated a dining table using pieces from the auction interspersed with modern tableware, flowers and pomegranates. Their high end rental business is nothing new, we learnt that in the 17th- and 18-centuries it was common to borrow beautiful artefacts for a special dinner. In the second pic, Nette is cradling an ice-cream cup made for Catherine The Great. It’s hardly bigger than an egg cup as ice-cream was a rare treat, only the swankiest houses had an ice room. The detail on it is incredible. It is valued at £15-20,000 if you want to add it to your Xmas list. @countryandtownhouse #auctionhouse #auction #tableware #tablescapes #glassware #tablesetting

ECC OPEN ZOOM
Melancholy Wedgwood
Dr Iris Moon & Patricia F. Ferguson @vasemadness
Thursday 11 April @ 6pm

We are delighted to invite you to the English Ceramic Circle’s next zoom lecture, scheduled for 11th April at 6pm (UK).

Iris Moon will be reading excerpts from her new book, Melancholy Wedgwood (MIT Press, 2024), followed by a conversation with Patricia Ferguson, curator, scholar, and author of Ceramics: 400 Years of British Collecting in 100 Masterpieces. Melancholy Wedgwood traces the multiple strands in the life of the ceramic entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood (1730–1795) to propose an alternative view of eighteenth-century England’s tenuous relationship to our own lives and times, amid the ruins of late-capitalist modernity.

Iris Moon is Associate Curator in the European Sculpture and Decorative Arts Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she is currently planning Monstrous Beauty, an exhibition on Chinoiserie, women, and porcelain. She is the author of Luxury after the Terror and coeditor with Richard Taws of Time, Media, and Visuality in Post-Revolutionary France. She teaches at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.

Patricia F. Ferguson is an Independent Scholar, having worked for the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, National Trust and National Trust for Scotland. Her publications include Ceramics: 400 years of British Collecting in 100 Masterpieces (2016) and Pots, Prints and Politics: Ceramics with an Agenda from the 14th to the 20th century (2021).

When I heard there was going to be an OCS lecture on ceramics in Scotland’s National Trust properties, I of course couldn’t miss it! I loved learning about the uniqueness of each collection and the historical characters who so lovingly assembled them. I also appreciated the inclusion of snuff bottles and ceramics for the Southeast Asian markets - two of my favorite topics! Can’t believe there’s only one more lecture left this year.

Patricia Ferguson @vasemadness , Independent Scholar and FPS Committee Member will explore English Rococo in her presentation 'Chelsea's Extreme Rococo: A Perspicuous Misunderstanding or a Calculated Risk'.

Here are a few examples of Chelsea porcelain vases featuring extreme Rococo lines and shapes. Which is your favorite? 👀👉🏻

1-3 Potpourri Vase, soft-paste porcelain, Chelsea, c. 1758-68. V&A, 828-1882.

🌺Heart-shaped cartouche, one side featuring ‘La Cuillette de Cerises’ after Boucher, the other side features peacocks. Applied flowers adorn the sides of the vase and the crown of the lid.

4-6 Potpourri Vase, soft-paste porcelain, Chelsea, c. 1758-68. V&A, 830-1882.

🌺One side features a painted scene of cattle and herdsman in the Flemish style within a gilded cartouche. The other side features exotic birds.

7-9 The Foundling Vase, soft-paste porcelain, Chelsea, c. 1762-63. V&A, C.52&A-1964.

🌺One of a pair, the vase features Rococo scrollwork handles and gilded cartouches on each side. The enameled figure is copied from 'Le Berger Recompense' after Boucher. This vase was presented by Dr. George Garnier to London's foundling hospital for abandoned children. The foundling hospital was also Britain's first public art gallery.
