Thank you to everyone who made our Open House Wednesday night a dreamscape of print community!! We estimate over 150 people came through to letterpress print with both @candy_alexandra1 and our MFA grads, riso print with @vasqmic and screenprint with @thetylerprintguild
And thanks to @candy_alexandra1 as our Visiting Artist, to Mary Phelan, for her generous transfer of her Vandercook SP20 to Tyler’s print studios and to all of our donors who funded the purchase!!
What do y’all think - should we do it again?!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO KATE!!!! Today is @katebingburt’s big day (Hank’s big day was yesterday, for the record - happy belated birthday to HANK) and we want to celebrate Outlet’s freaking founder and the force behind so many of the things we do here (editor’s note: this is Leland but I speak on behalf of everyone when I say that Kate is THE BEST)! Outlet simply wouldn’t exist without Kate, but even more important is the support and energy and inspiration and generosity that Kate pours into everyone she meets. Everyone who has printed or taken a workshop at Outlet, anyone who knows her through @psugd, the folks who saw her give her incredible talk @typecon last week, or really any single person who spends a few seconds around her knows what it’s like to be swept up in her enthusiasm and joy. Thank you Kate, for everything 💛 Let’s wish her a happy birthday! 🌈🌈🌈

Pictures:
1. Kate’s actual true aura of literal sunshine ☀️
2. A polaroid of Kate and me tabling @volumes.designlibrary last year that hangs by my desk, right in front of her diet coke and orange julius mini prints
3. Kate is always looking out for light leaks and protected @vasqmic and @fromzab while they scanned their faces on one of the riso sisters
4. The infamous and disgusting peep cake
5. The annual photo that @anxious__microbe, Kate and I take with our jimmy johns sandwiches while setting up for crafty wonderland (sponsor us @jimmyjohns)
6. Did you know that Kate LOVES pencils. Of all sizes.
7. Kate and a bunch of flowers in front of a bunch of her paintings during her @veinofgoldpdx residency
8. A very pregnant Kate loading a fluorescent pink drum into Barbara, like a badass 💖

WE LOVE YOU KATE!!! ✨✨✨

For Whom Do You Design? a thesis project

Those of us who create things with the intention of use by others have an obligation to create with our users in mind. Who are these users? How do they see the world?

For Whom asks these questions and offers resources when the answer is “not like me.” Six months of research and iteration have culminated in a web experience I am proud of. Debuted at Permaneo, a design thesis exhibition, and coming to a browser near you soon!

💜 to my gallery buddies and the best thesis 2 prof out there!!

Tyler Print grads spent yesterday pulling sheets at PAFA’s lovely papermaking studio! Using old clothes, old proofs from each of us and some cotton linters, we tried a few different mixes we nicknamed Funfetti, Vanilla Chocolate Chip and Dust Bunnies. Can’t wait to see the paper once dry tomorrow.
Thanks to Clay Tenhula for all the insight and stewardship of that lovely space!

Last week Tyler Print got to help host Sam Van Aken in our etching studios for a whirlwind of Cricut plate drawing and printing extravaganza! Sam worked with our BFAs and shared his process using a Cricut to draw into etching grounds on copper plates. Students and faculty made plates with the Cricut and Sam made a gorgeous plate of the Seckel Pear. Grateful to everyone who hung out in the print studios with us to learn etching and help print!

Thanks to all the staff at Tyler who made this visit possible too. Printmaking is always Better Together! 🍐🍐🍐🍐🍐
