Save the date! This November 11, we are thrilled to be opening up our space again for live printing, refreshments, and an all-around good time. This year, local illustrator Kah Yangni is our artist in residence. Visitors can take home prints from a special edition created during their time here—their work explores justice, queerness, joy, and collective freedom.

Last year’s event was so fun that we couldn’t wait to do it all over again. Don’t miss it! Join us from 5:30-7:30 PM. No registration required.

Visitors should come to the Tyler School of Art at 1300 W Norris Street and look for the printmaking department. We’re at the end of the green hallway on the second floor! taken in Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University by @tyler_printmaking

Please give a warm welcome to first year MFA candidate Caishu Tian 🛼

Caishu is a printmaker from Hohot, Inner Mongolia/Los Angeles, California. They received their BA in Art and History of Art & Visual Culture from University of California Santa Cruz.

Working across a variety of printmaking methods, Caishu’s work frequently uses diptychs to think about time, technology, memory, nostalgia, and place. They are also interested in exhibitions and art curation, currently working as one of the Graduate Assistants for Temple Contemporary.

They also love roller-skating and want to go really bad.

We are very happy to introduce @kateavess here as a first year MFA candidate.

Kat Eaves is an artist from Powdersville, South Carolina. Her work centers on the overlooked. She uses printmaking as a tool for questioning how sustained, careful observation can transform mundane or disregarded objects into sites of meaning and shared experience. In 2021, she received a BFA in Visual Arts from Clemson University.

Kat is coming to Philadelphia from Atlanta, Georgia - a city she loves deeply! In Atlanta, she worked as the Programs Manager at the Atlanta Printmakers Studio (APS), overseeing all the educational programming for the non-profit print shop. Prior to this role, she was a 2023 Emerging Artist in Residence at APS. Kat also spent many years working for the Atlanta-based art criticism magazine, Burnaway. She moved here with her partner Alex and two cats, Dante and Phoebe. Outside of the studio she loves seeing movies, cooking, and is a huge restaurant and hospitality nerd.

Welcome Valden Rattenbury (and friends 🐓) to the chat. Seen here with their partner’s chicken Soren, fast asleep on their arm, Valden shares more below:

I’m from Northern California (a town called Petaluma which is about 1 hour north of San Francisco on the 101). I’ve been making mostly prints with religious theme and references in my academic life, though I’ve recently found myself making more art about relationship and intimacy. They’ve mostly been paintings and drawings while I’ve had limited press access. I’m super interested in glass and stained glass and am super excited to start working in that medium while at Tyler.

Aside from art I’m a big fan of hikes, poetry, archeology, tea and coffee, and ice skating! (If anyone has good public skate rinks please let me know). More info about me and my work is at valdenarts.com.

Say hello to Michael Vasquez, a second-year MFA and “all-around icon” from Santa Cruz, CA. From Michael:

I’m a riso artist and graphic designer from Santa Cruz, California. I’m currently studying at Temple Rome, where I’ve been thinking a lot about time, memory, place, and what it means to carry pieces of people and places with us.

My practice explores memory, intimacy, and connection through printmaking, photography, poetry, zines, and printed ephemera. I’m interested in the things we leave with one another and what remains after time has changed us—using repetition, deterioration, circulation, and touch to think about how images, stories, and traces move between people.

Tyler Print grads spent yesterday pulling sheets at PAFA’s lovely papermaking studio! Using old clothes, old proofs from each of us and some cotton linters, we tried a few different mixes we nicknamed Funfetti, Vanilla Chocolate Chip and Dust Bunnies. Can’t wait to see the paper once dry tomorrow.
Thanks to Clay Tenhula for all the insight and stewardship of that lovely space!
