It’s been over two years since breast cancer entered my life. And when I look back, I don’t only see cancer. I see discovery.

Discovery of strength I didn’t know I had, what truly matters, and quite literally, the world.

I’ve traveled, challenged myself, tried new things, and learned not to save quite so much for “someday.”

Not because cancer made me fearless. It didn’t. And breast cancer isn’t who I am. It’s something that happened to me.

I haven’t done this alone. Ralph, my daughters, my family, and friends have been my rock through the fear, surgeries, changes, and uncertainty.

Every woman’s experience is different, and I can only speak for mine.

This October, check on the friend diagnosed last month, but also the one diagnosed two, five, or ten years ago. Treatment doesn’t necessarily end when everyone thinks it does.

I don’t get to choose everything that happens to me. But I do get to make choices about how I live alongside it.

To stay curious. To keep making plans. To keep discovering the world, myself, and whatever comes next.

Part 2: An encounter we’ll never forget 🇮🇩

We’d be lying if we said we weren’t a little scared.

As our Zodiacs approached Agats in remote South Papua, dozens of canoes filled with painted Asmat warriors appeared, chanting and paddling straight toward us.

Knowing the region’s history, our Zodiac went quiet. But what followed was unexpected: a warm welcome and a chance to witness traditions passed down through generations, including a traditional burial ceremony.

What began with uncertainty became one of the most fascinating cultural encounters of our expedition.

Sometimes, the most unforgettable journeys take us far beyond our comfort zone.
