Ventura County's best source for events, music, lifestyle and culture online and in print.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
When artists and vendors invest their time and money into my events, I put that right back into marketing them. Whether it’s a 1-day event or a 2-to-3-day convention, every single show gets backed with real ad dollars—both in print and online. Out this week in the VC Reporter and hitting inboxes directly through our dedicated newsletter with @midsummerscream dedicated newsletter. I invest in you because you invest in me. Hope to see you this weekend! 🩸🩸🍷 #venturacounty #venturacalifornia #localbrand #supportsmallbusiness #curation

Tony Award–Winning Musical ‘Ragtime’ Comes to Ventura’s Rubicon Theatre! Sweeping Story of Early 20th-Century America is Karyl Lynn Burns Last Show. By Maggie Yates, SB Independent Pictured: Danny Becker, Chelle Denton, Carter Michael. Photo: @loren_haar RAGTIME (by Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty, and Lynn Ahrens) has been selected as the final show of her tenure for outgoing producing artistic director Karyl Lynn Burns, who is retiring after several decades with the Rubicon Theatre in Ventura. Set in early 20th-century America, Ragtime dovetails stories of the white upper-middle class with Harlem culture and Ellis Island immigrants settling in the “new world.” Usually performed with a cast of around 40 people, the Rubicon’s production, directed by J. Scott Lapp, has pared the cast down to fewer than 20 actors to fit this grand story onto the intimate Rubicon stage. “There are some stories that we return to because they’re beautiful; some we return to because they’re necessary to hear,” says Lapp. “Even with a show set in 1906, Ragtime is still very relevant today … it asks one of the most essential questions that an American play can ask: who gets to belong?” Carter Michael plays Coalhouse Walker, who represents the Black experience during this period of history. Coalhouse was born after the abolition of slavery, during a time when, says Michael, “Black people had aspirations for what the new century was going to be…. They want to move forward in the country, but that hope is slowly taken away from them. They figure out that they have to keep striving, regardless.” “RAGTIME is a story about connection and the possibility of change,” says Lapp. “Questions of immigration and race and inequality and the American dream are at the center of our conversation. Ragtime doesn’t offer easy answers — it shows us a country capable of tremendous generosity, but also tremendous cruelty. It shows people reaching for a better way of life but also carrying the weight of history with them. In 2026, that feels remarkably close to home.” Rubicon has extended their run of RAGTIME, so you can see the show October 21 through November 15. TICKETS @ link in bio.

Late to posting my thoughts on Steve Bennett’s $2 million for Main Street Moves, but it’s still coming up so I think it’s important to talk about. In case you don’t know, there was a ceremony downtown with Ventura Pop, Steve Bennett, and several council members a couple of weeks ago celebrating the closure/$2 mil WHILE the ad-hoc meetings with business owners and property owners who having been asking council to open the street for years, were still going on. I recorded this video last week and didn’t get a chance to post it. The ad-hoc meetings were wrapped up THIS week, and it’s clear that a major majority of business owners and property owners want the street open. Will council listen? We shall see. We’ve offered solutions like a flex/hybrid street that closes for events and activating parks and the promenade (already car-free) as pedestrian spaces. One thing’s for sure. This issue isn’t going away. As businesses close or leave downtown, it’s going to be even more imperative that council pivots to a flex option. Hopefully they do so before more businesses close.
