STEP 68 | ears licked clean by a snake
with Briony Galligan
OPEN STUDIO
22 October 2026
19:00–21:00
ears licked clean by a snake is the outcome of Briony Galligan’s research into toys during her one-month residency.
The installation at Yellow Brick’s studio follows traces of storytelling, puppet theatre, and ancient toys. Through play, shapes become language.
Sssssss. Σσσσσσ.
Between the letters Φ and Ψ, Mycenaean clay dolls and ritual objects, and the figure of the snake, language slithers between the playing body and the animal body.
Can the story also be the puppet?

Briony is an artist and teacher from Naarm/Melbourne, Australia. She makes environments—through drawing, installation and sculpture—that are slippery, suspended and atmospheric. Briony has exhibited locally and internationally and worked with various artist-run spaces.

🎶 Can music help us shift how we feel, rather than just match it?

FEIT PhD Graduand and Melbourne Conservatorium of Music alum, Dr Xanthe Lowe-Brown (@Xanthe_LB) explored this across three connected studies, testing how emotion-aware music technology could support everyday emotional wellbeing, and where the ethical limits lie.

Her research developed into a music plugin, MoodDJ, which builds personalised playlist journeys from how you feel to how you want to feel.

😱 Just announced: Frightening free films! 🍿

55 years ago, Wake in Fright made its Australian premiere, having already received a Grand Prix nomination at @festivaldecannes. Based on Kenneth Cook’s novel, the film became pivotal in Australian New Wave and Ozploitation cinema, a cult hit that was considered lost until negatives were found in Pittsburgh in the early 2000s.

Now, the return of @malthousetheatre’s acclaimed stage adaptation this November, UMAC explores the nature of horror, Australiana and the art of adaptation with two special screenings curated with the Director of the world-first Horror Studies Center at @pittofficial, Professor Adam Lowenstein.

On Halloween, join us at @cinema_eclipse for a free screening of Colin Eggleston’s Long Weekend (1978), another inspired use of the Australian natural landscape for horror that, unlike Wake in Fright, was an entirely local production. This screening will feature a video introduction from Adam Lowenstein.

Then, in November, we head to Federation Hall at @vca_mcm for a collaboration with @artsunimelb’s Melbourne Public Humanities Initiative. This time appearing live in Melbourne, Professor Adam Lowenstein will join Associate Professor Wendy Haslem and theatre makers Zahra Newman and Declan Greene as they discuss the Australian horror classic’s journey across page, screen and stage with Dr Seth Robinson. This discussion will be followed by a screening of the iconic 1971 film.

🎟️ Secure your seats to these free film screenings and the stage production now via the link in our bio.
