Our finalist of the day is @vda_designco Congratulations Nicky for being chosen in the Top 10 Hot Young Designers! Nicky brings a unique blend of skills to the table. Their journey from leading a 3D design division at a branding agency to founding their own concept design business showcases their entrepreneurial spirit. Here is what Nicky says about the screen design:

”My idea is based on the modular use of hoops to create patterns. Hoops link us together, through memories and colour, from pool hoops to hula hoops, they form the fun basis of an outdoor South African childhood, public pools, beachfronts and good memories outdoors. With varying sizes they create a modular system that can be repeated and adjusted to create a selection of different screens in the Loooops range. I believe designs should function with a strategy or design thinking behind the aesthetics. They should make sense before and beyond it’s installation, whether in terms of ease of manufacturing, modularity, materials, adaptability or being interchangeable. A design that allows the hand of the maker / human element to be part of the process, while also working with a circularity in mind, from a modular starting point to a modular end point.”

If you only know me as @vda_designco, here’s a name & face to go with my designs. I’m Nicky vdA. I have an identical twin, so in a parallel universe I’d be an amazingly talented and inspiring teacher @vdakelly.

I studied a BCOM and then did my BTECH Interior Design. Thank goodness that opened the gates for my creativity to flow.

I love flexibility, challenging the status quo and thinking outside of the box for solutions that benefit people positively.

I really appreciate creating a lifestyle, home and community that contributes to living well.
I’m inspired by design that has an impact on how people live, how they feel and how they engage with others and their world around them.

Design isn’t just surface level, if you can change how someone feels in a space, you can change how they behave. You can inspire people to be and feel better.

Inspiring people and creating a sense of wonder is as important as sunshine! When you have the chance to create something with impact, leap into it.

Introducing Cox Yeats offices. This was a fantastic job where I could design some custom furniture for the office space (including a rug, will post it soon!) We picked up the baton to get the interiors across the finish line towards the end of the building process.
I absolutely love these wall planters we installed by @designs_by_day,
I’m a 100% supporter of real plants but plan B may include the everlasting variety 😉 to bring some life into a space without worrying about being a plant parent.
(Believe it or not but these planters are in the bathrooms)

The @coffeeandlifekzn project was one of my favourite blue sky, “place-making” concepts. Collaborating with the center owner, the coffee provider, the architect, the branding agency and myself (as interior designer) to create something exciting and new on the existing property that would bring it all to life….

A morning in @lineagewestville “coffee-bar-within-a-store” at @resilientflooringsa after it had just opened. The Westville store has been open for a while now and matched the industrial vibe of the original Lineage Headquarters. Subsequently Lineage HQ moved and we were able to evolve the Lineage look & feel…fresh slate!! 🥳 check out @lineage_coffeesa to see the updated Lineage HQ in Hillcrest 🖤🤍

A little concept sketch for the @lineagewestville “coffee-bar-within-a-store” @resilientflooringsa . I’ve been working with Craig for a few years, since Lineage became my 2nd office, and he moves faster than finished designs 😂 so I’ve learnt to design on-the-go with him. Another collaborative project that started as an idea (in a completely different, existing building) and blossomed into Coffee & Life (in a completely new, purpose-built building by @jeremysteere) in Nottingham Road. As usual, nothing but the best coffee from @lineage_coffeesa 🖤
