POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

On The Banks Of Pampa by Volga, translated from the Telugu by Purnima Tammireddy, is the third book in the Volga's trilogy of feminist retellings of the Indian epics. It shows the story of Sabari beyond the significance of her as a person who meets Lord Rama. Here, Volga takes the readers on the journey of Sabari's life, from being born as an aranyavasi and how she was forced to be enslaved by the state, and she breaks free from there and finds herself on the banks of Pampa.

The key element of the book was the debate between the preservation and conservation of forest and natural resources along with its inhabitants vs. the growth and development imagined by the rulemakers, a debate that finds its relevance in contemporary times more than any era, where we can see how the negligence of the former is resulting in its consequences, which were only imagined—very correctly—by the previous generations and our legends and was shown with such a force by Volga through Sabari.

The translation by Purnima Tammireddy was a delight to read, and although I have no idea about the Telugu language, I have enjoyed reading this translation that has a fluency and generosity in its language, which somehow traces it back to its original with words and spellings you cannot put your hand on but feel.

The story leaves its impact very strong, and one would not be able to detach from the characters and the values they carry long after finishing the book—I am writing this review after finishing this book months ago because I couldn't find words to describe this book, and I still think I'm not doing a good job at it, so can you just go and read this—and it's a book that I'll always remember for what it says and what it leaves for the readers to answer for themselves.

It was my first book by Volga, and after reading this and loving it so much, I'm going to read the other two books in the feminist retelling trilogy by Volga—The Liberation Of Sita and Yashodhara—hopefully soon. Have you read any books by her? Let me know in the comments.

Also, the cover by Veer Misra is so stunning. It is one of my all time favorite covers!

Thank you @HarperCollinsIn for the book.

𝗕𝗨𝗚𝗦! 𝙒𝙚’𝙧𝙚 𝘼𝙡𝙡 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙 is on view till 11th Oct!! 🪲

There is an anthropological curiosity to the show. We observe other species, assign meaning to their behaviour and find patterns that remind us of ourselves.

What’s exciting about the accessibility of @shacocohq is that it’s a space where art collectors, gallery regulars, neighbourhood families and anyone passing through the lanes of Shahpur Jat can experience the show together.

The show is on view daily, from 3rd - 11th October, 10am to 7pm at Shacoco in Shahpurjat, New Delhi.

Bring all your friends, acquire & support alive artists 🦋🐌🐞🐝🐜🐛🧚🏽‍♀️

A pretty cover can be a very dangerous thing… because suddenly, your TBR has another 10 books. 👀📚

We asked our members to show us the covers they simply love, and we got some very beautiful picks.

And yes, we’re giving a little extra love to beautiful covers made without AI. 🎨🤍

Now it’s your turn - which one is your favourite? And what book would you add to this list?

P.S. I have tried to find the cover designers best to my knowledge. There is scope of it being wrong, so if you know the right name, do tag.

"Egrets, While War" by @tishanidoshi published by HarperCollins India, is a must read poetry collection. It has many things to offer and while we have time, we need to gather them.

What a beautiful cover you've given to this book @veermisra

Here's my analysis of the collection. I hope you'll enjoy reading the piece as much as I enjoyed the book and writing about it.

If you haven't grabbed a copy of the book yet, do it, ASAP!

Happy reading!

Tabish Khair's "Drown All the Refugees", published by HarperCollins India, is a disturbing but delightful read. It explores the present world in a way that only he can. It is audacious. And doesn't drag itself.

Here's my essay on the novel. I hope you enjoy reading the piece as much as I loved writing about the book. Absolutely loved the cover by @veermisra and @highonmangoes

Also, if you haven't grabbed the novel yet, do it ASAP!

Cheers!

Most people walk past wetlands without a second glance. We get it—they’re muddy, a little murky, and often easy to mistake as empty.

But beneath the surface lies another world of shifting waters, hidden lives, ancient myths, and creatures that have adapted to these spaces for millions of years.

Consider this your invitation. Step into the unknown.
