🎭 More Than Just a Movement

My first major theatre production at NYU!! ❤️

After six weeks of rehearsals, countless repetitions, and so many unforgettable moments, we finally brought this beautiful production to life.

Through Verbatim Theatre, we explored stories of migration, identity, and belonging, using real interviews and preserving every pause, hesitation, and imperfection. With 12 performers, six interactive carousels, and stories collected from 50 interviews, we invited audiences not just to watch, but to participate, reflect, and connect.

One of the most meaningful parts was portraying someone from a different cultural background. I played Niyati, an Indian girl whose experiences felt surprisingly close to my own. Her reflections on missing home during Diwali reminded me of celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival away from home. Different cultures, yet such similar feelings.

This experience reminded me why I love theatre and education so much, art allows us to step into someone else’s world, discover new perspectives, and recognize our shared humanity.

Most importantly, I’m endlessly grateful for the incredible cast and creative team, my parents for always believing in me, and all my wonderful friends who came to support me with so much love, flowers, and thoughtful gifts. 🥹💐

You all remind me how beautiful this world can be. I hope to always give back the same kindness, sincerity, and love I’ve been lucky enough to receive.

To more stories, more perspectives, and more love. ❤️🎬

Someone is turned away from care because of who they are. Someone leaves a clinic feeling less human than when they arrived. This happens every day. Can theatre shift how care is delivered?

The @who is clear: discrimination in healthcare leads to poorer outcomes, and preventable deaths:

⚠️People with disabilities can die up to 20 years earlier due to systemic barriers in care.

⚠️The poorest households face impossible trade-offs, shaped by intersecting inequities.

⚠️Over 120 million forcibly displaced people struggle to access even basic healthcare.

The Theatre to Stop Discrimination in Healthcare project brought these realities into clinical and educational spaces through performance.

In partnership with Health Sciences, Indigenous Educational Studies, and the Women’s and Gender Studies programs at Brock University, Mirror Theatre, the Theatre & Health Lab, Verbatim Performance Lab, and Jameel Arts & Health Lab at NYU Steinhardt, and Indigenous community collaborators in the Niagara region in Canada, stories of discrimination were shared directly with healthcare providers and trainees.

Together we asked:

What biases shape care❓
What systems sustain inequity❓
What would compassionate, just care actually look like❓

This work now continues through the launch of the Health, Arts, and Justice Lab at Brock University, creating a sustained space for research, collaboration, and action.

Theatre cannot solve structural inequities alone but it can make them visible, felt, and harder to ignore. And that is often where change begins.

The Jameel Arts & Health Lab leads a dedicated team of early career and established researchers advancing rigorous, policy relevant, and globally focused research on the health value of the arts across the lifespan and diverse contexts. Here are a few highlights from recent presentations at academic conferences and convenings.

Post-doctoral researcher Dr. Elisabeth Bahr presented findings from Jameel Arts & Health Lab-led and affiliated research on the role of the arts in supporting youth mental health at the NYU Steinhardt Center for Health and Rehabilitation Research Symposium (April 24). This research will inform an upcoming Lab-WHO policy brief on the arts and youth mental health.

Top: Affiliated researcher Dr. Constantina Theofanopoulou gave a lecture at the Neural Basis of Natural Behaviors conference (Athens, Greece, June 12, 2026), where she spoke about her latest research on the neurobiology of speech and dance, and how dance-based interventions can impact the brain and behavior in Parkinson’s disease.

Bottom: Dr. Theofanopoulou gave an interview to Renée Fleming about her research in testing the neural and behavioral effects of dance in people with Parkinson’s, in collaboration with Dance for PD®.

Through the Jameel Arts & Health Lab, Dr. Theofanopolou and postdoctoral researcher Alexis Sunderlage are leading research on the neural mechanisms of Dance for PD in collaboration with the Mark Morris Dance Group.

Dr. Calum Smith, Consultant, World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe and Research Fellow in Population Health at the University of Oxford, presented at the Arctic Arts Summit in Ubmeje/Umeå, Sweden (June 16-18).

Dr. Smith joined a panel that explored the purpose, context, and promise of artistic interventions for the mental health of young people in the circumpolar region and presented on the Lab’s pilot project ‘Inuusa!’, which took place in Aasiaat, Kalaallit Nunaat, in 2025-2026.

Panelists:
• Paalit Mølgaard Rasmussen, Artistic lead: Inuusa!,
• Vivi Vold, Researcher at the EU Horizon research project, Birgejupmi at The Arctic University of Norway, and PhD Fellow at SILA department in Ilisimatusarfik - University of Gree

Last week, I had the privilege of working at @universityofbc in Vancouver, Canada, in the Faculty of Education and the Research-based Theatre Lab.

I was able to lead a verbatim performance workshop with @verbatimperformancelab data on migration. I participated in a Research-based Theatre lab project on climate and energy with other artist-researchers and engineers, and I worked with graduate students and global leaders in Drama Education. All while taking in the beautiful Vancouver landscape and eeking out the first draft of The Migration Project #ethnodrama for its Fall premiere at @nyusteinhardt @nyuedtheatre.

#grateful to George Belliveau for the invitation to UBC and for his always generous hospitality.
