Upcoming Performances: More Than Just the Movement

More Than Just the Movement is a verbatim documentary theatre investigation that invites audiences to consider how people residing in the United States experience migration. Drawing directly from interviews conducted in Fall 2025, this performance centers the voices and experiences of those who shared their stories. As the journey unfolds, audiences are encouraged to listen, reflect, and engage in a deeper conversation—not only with the people whose stories are being told, but also with their own ideas and beliefs about what migration means.

Performances run from October 15th-18th at the Blackbox Theatre, Pless Hall.

Someone is turned away from care because of who they are. Someone leaves a clinic feeling less human than when they arrived. This happens every day. Can theatre shift how care is delivered?

The @who is clear: discrimination in healthcare leads to poorer outcomes, and preventable deaths:

⚠️People with disabilities can die up to 20 years earlier due to systemic barriers in care.

⚠️The poorest households face impossible trade-offs, shaped by intersecting inequities.

⚠️Over 120 million forcibly displaced people struggle to access even basic healthcare.

The Theatre to Stop Discrimination in Healthcare project brought these realities into clinical and educational spaces through performance.

In partnership with Health Sciences, Indigenous Educational Studies, and the Women’s and Gender Studies programs at Brock University, Mirror Theatre, the Theatre & Health Lab, Verbatim Performance Lab, and Jameel Arts & Health Lab at NYU Steinhardt, and Indigenous community collaborators in the Niagara region in Canada, stories of discrimination were shared directly with healthcare providers and trainees.

Together we asked:

What biases shape care❓
What systems sustain inequity❓
What would compassionate, just care actually look like❓

This work now continues through the launch of the Health, Arts, and Justice Lab at Brock University, creating a sustained space for research, collaboration, and action.

Theatre cannot solve structural inequities alone but it can make them visible, felt, and harder to ignore. And that is often where change begins.

Last week, I had the privilege of working at @universityofbc in Vancouver, Canada, in the Faculty of Education and the Research-based Theatre Lab.

I was able to lead a verbatim performance workshop with @verbatimperformancelab data on migration. I participated in a Research-based Theatre lab project on climate and energy with other artist-researchers and engineers, and I worked with graduate students and global leaders in Drama Education. All while taking in the beautiful Vancouver landscape and eeking out the first draft of The Migration Project #ethnodrama for its Fall premiere at @nyusteinhardt @nyuedtheatre.

NYC Friends: I'm very excited to be giving my first official book talk on October 14 at NYU Center for the Humanities. The event kicks off at 6:00pm at 20 Cooper Square. I will begin speaking about #ethnodrama as a research method, and then we'll share an excerpt from the Verbatim Performance Lab project "Not Sure If I'm Free To," which is built from interviews with faculty, students, staff, and alumni about freedom of expression and academic freedom at New York University. The performance features Averil Carr, Derek Herman, Heddy Lahmann, Sarah Misch, Mimi Schlecht, Mary Walker, and Karl O'Brian Williams. This event is free and open to the public, but please make sure to register using this link: https://bit.ly/creating-ethnodrama taken in NYU Center for the Humanities by @verbatimperformancelab

On October 2 and 3, I had a great time at McGill University in Montréal, offering a two-day professional development workshop for faculty and students as part of the Rehearsals for Change research project for in-service and pre-service teachers. The workshop provided educators with skills to foster equitable and inclusive learning environments using #ethnodrama and #verbatimperformance.

Rehearsals for Change (RfC) is a multi-year, arts-based educational research (ABER) initiative designed to reimagine professional learning (PL) for educators in Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Decolonization, and Justice contexts.

Grounded in the concept of “rehearsing” from psychology and theatre, RfC creates spaces where pre-service teachers, instructors, and field supervisors can practice, reflect, and refine their pedagogical approaches to address inequities and foster inclusive, accountable, and justice-oriented classrooms. Through facilitated arts-based workshops, participants engage in embodied, relational learning experiences that promote teacher agency, culturally relevant pedagogy, and long-term change.

Thanks to Mindy Carter for the invitation to participate and Sabi Hinkson for her helpful support! taken in McGill University Faculty of Education by @verbatimperformancelab
