Hispanic Heritage Month gives us an opportunity to celebrate Hispanic excellence, honor the cultures and traditions that shape our communities, and introduce our stories, music, art, food, history, and traditions to a wider audience. Throughout the year, HOPE is proud to bring events, programming, and culture throughout NYC, creating opportunities for our community to celebrate who we are while inviting others to learn, experience, and celebrate with us. Look good. Feel good. Do good. ✨ We all remember that first-day-of-school feeling. The nerves, the excitement, and wanting to walk in feeling like your best self. As we kicked off our first year as the COMPASS program at PS 189, we wanted to start before the first day of school by making sure our students felt confident, supported, prepared, and ready. Fresh cuts and braids, school supplies, and a little extra care to start the year strong. Grateful to @ps189m , @thehopeorganization for always helping us bring the vision together, @thaturban_edge and its barbers, braiders, and nail techs, along with @styledby.n4ni and @xarlynpx , for helping our students shine. UN SANCOCHO — LOOK WHAT COMMUNITY BUILT. Five years ago, it started with a simple mission: our Board Member @heightz.the.entrepreneur wanted to make sure children started the school year with a bookbag and the supplies they needed. That became the Benny Heightz Bookbag Giveaway. 🎒 Over the last three years, our community transformed that giveaway into Un Sancocho bringing education, culture, health, art, literacy, movement, resources and FUN together. Just like a real sancocho, everybody brings something to the pot. 🥣❤️ This year: 🩺 @somoscare, our Presenting Partner, provided health screenings, resources and support. 🎒 1,000 FREE bookbags + school supplies, with support from Brave Church, Liberty Coca-Cola, The RING Garden, Girl Scouts and our community. 📚 3,000 FREE BOOKS celebrating our stories and culture, plus readings from young author Tony Santos Mack and @luzmackofficial. 🎨 Cultural art with @crudo_creates 🏃🏽‍♂️ Wellness with @inwoodrunclub 🍎 Fresh fruit from @verdevidany 💃🏽 Culture through movement with @edwinmferreras 🎶 Music and energy from @tupiscisfavorito_ + our incredible dancers 💰 Financial literacy with M&T Bank 📚 Literacy with Girl Scouts 🎒 School supplies + local opportunities from The Met 🤝 Resources from NMIC, FACE, Sports & Health and our community partners. We’re proud to have SOMOS as the Presenting Partner of Un Sancocho. SOMOS didn’t just put their name on the event they showed up for our families, providing health screenings and helping HOPE make sure every station was active, accessible, and FREE for our community. 🙌🏽 Because of support like this, Un Sancocho became a full day of experiences: 🎒 FREE bookbags filled with school supplies 📚 FREE books celebrating our stories and culture 🥁 Youth performers from across NYC, including an incredible @marchingcobrasofny 🌎 A cultural journey through 7 different countries, led by @edwinmferreras through dance and movement with all our dance crews 🎶 @tupiscisfavorito_ bringing the music, energy, and rhythm that kept our community moving 📖 Stories from young author Tony Santos Mack and children’s author @luzmariaofficial 🎨 Hands-on cultural art with @crudo_creates 🏃🏽‍♂️ Wellness and movement with the running coaches from @inwoodrunclub 🍎 Fresh fruit from @Verdevida and healthy snacks distributed throughout the community 🩺 Health screenings and resources from @somoscare This is what partnership should look like showing up, investing in our people, and helping create experiences where health, culture, education, creativity, and joy can all live in the same space. When we tell y'all the lineup is STACKED for WHINFest we aren't kidding! From our performers (who are local or have an uptown connection), to our activity stations (Uptown stories will also be doing writing activities at their tables!) We wanted to celebrate our 10 years with our community who have supported us. This is a love letter to Washington Heights and Inwood. Thank you @dyckmanfarmhouse for hosting us. Thank you WHIN community for supporting us and allowing us to champion 10 years of Food Justice work uptown. From our gardens, to our grow kits, our volunteer hours, our distributions - Thank you.
