Every great dish starts with a foundation.

In our kitchen, that foundation is sofrito. Fresh Ají dulce, Garlic, Red Peppers, Green Peppers and Cilantro. Chopped by hand, blended with care, and passed down from abuelas and abuelos to all of us.

Earlier this year, we made it from scratch. Not from a jar. Not from a shortcut. A recipe designed with love and for the heart.

Verde Vida and Chef Antonio started the sofrito class earlier this year, and we’re proud to see the idea spreading. At Verde Vida the crucial ingredient is comunidad.

That’s who we are. That’s how we Fight Hunger. Together, one table at a time.

Gracias, Chef Antonio, for sharing your recipe and leading the way.

From our comunidad to the House floor.

We are humbled and grateful to Congressman Jim McGovern (D-MA) for visiting Verde Vida this summer and lifting up our work for the world to see. Through La Casita and our Pop-Up Markets, we’re fighting hunger with dignity, choice, and fresh, culturally relevant food.

A heartfelt thank you to @sharingexcess for standing with us in the fight against hunger and helping turn good quality produce into nourishment, dignity, and possibility for our comunidad.

Thank you Congressman @repmcgovern for carrying our community’s story into the halls of Congress taken in Washington Heights by @verdevidany

Comunidad gathered around the table once again.

We are deeply grateful to Chef Antonio for leading another Sofrito Making Class with parents, teachers, and community leaders who joined us for Verde Vida’s second Culinary Education Class.

And yes, our current interns came ready to work and dice up veggies. Fabio and Pablo diced peppers, cilantro, and celery as they created sofrito for the very first time. 🫑 🔪

Thank you to Puryved, @tmobile , @citizenscommittee , @thehopeorganization , and @ps189m for helping us create these experiences for our community.

Look good. Feel good. Do good. ✨

We all remember that first-day-of-school feeling. The nerves, the excitement, and wanting to walk in feeling like your best self.

As we kicked off our first year as the COMPASS program at PS 189, we wanted to start before the first day of school by making sure our students felt confident, supported, prepared, and ready. Fresh cuts and braids, school supplies, and a little extra care to start the year strong.

Grateful to @ps189m , @thehopeorganization for always helping us bring the vision together, @thaturban_edge and its barbers, braiders, and nail techs, along with @styledby.n4ni and @xarlynpx , for helping our students shine. And thank you to @verdevidany for supporting our families with fresh produce and pantry items.

What can $100 from @neighbor.fest do? At Verde Vida, it can support New York farmers, strengthen our local food system, and bring fresh, healthy food to students and families across Northern Manhattan and the Bronx.

With the support of the NeighborFest Grant, we can multiply that impact and continue fighting hunger with dignity.

Love, Comunidad y Comida.

This is what comunidad looks like.

We are incredibly grateful to @dudesfordads and their powerful group of volunteers who joined us at @ps189m to prepare 200+ Kits for Kids filled with yogurt, cheese, granola bars, applesauce and juice.

Their time, energy and commitment helped ensure students have access to healthy, nourishing snacks throughout the school day. Thank you, Dudes for Dads, for showing up for our students and fighting food insecurity alongside Verde Vida.

The Kits for Kids filled up La Casita’a fridge and dry goods pantry. We are incredibly grateful to the Dudes for Dads New York team for joining earlier today to Fight Hunger.

Love, Comunidad y Comida.

What once lived only as a dream now stands as La Casita; a place where students and families can access fresh produce, healthy snacks and nourishing food with dignity.

Built with love and rooted in comunidad, La Casita represents our promise that no student should have to learn on an empty stomach and no family should face hunger.

Thank you to @ps189m for creating a home for La Casita and standing alongside Verde Vida in the fight against hunger. Together, we are turning love into action; one student and one family at a time.

Thank you to our supporters, donors and partners for ensuring our vision came to life.
