I was at @hoto_gallery last May 16th accompanying my friend and photographer @k.apresian, and it turned out to be such a lovely evening filled with art and meaningful exchanges.

The exhibition IN/SU/LA presents works by 10 artists who took part in a residency on Ventotene - a small Italian island with a rich and complex history. The project was initiated and curated by @verenaosthoff and @yvonneandreini. I had the chance to meet Verena, and our conversation was deeply inspiring.
She told me about the days spent on Ventotene and the conceptual frame of the residency: how being on a small island invites reflection on limits- and how those very boundaries can become a space to go beyond, in thought, emotion, and creation.
Curiously, Ventotene is also the birthplace of the Ventotene Manifesto, written in 1941 during WWll: it was a bold political vision for a free and united Europe- advocating for a European and even world federation as a way to overcome war and totalitarianism.
It’s powerful to think about how a remote island, both then and now, can serve as a seedbed for such expansive ideas!
Another fascinating aspect of IN/SU/LA was the curatorial format: each artist created around seven “cards” using their own techniques. I found this to be an incredibly creative way of organizing an exhibition — a uniform format across all artists’ works, yet each one speaking its own language. The result was a wall and a half full of vibrant, diverse, and well-structured artworks — never chaotic, just full of layered narratives.

The techniques varied widely — from painting, photography, and sculpture to drawing — offering a rich visual experience.

The vernissage took place on May 16th, and the closing event is happening tomorrow, June 13th at 6pm.
If you're in Berlin, I honestly think you shouldn’t miss it!

✨ And for those in Italy: Insula will travel to Rome next month!

VENTOTENE

‚…After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD, the Greek name of the island gradually faded from memory. It was first mentioned in medieval sources as „Ventotenensis,“ which can be translated as „windy island“ (derived from the Italian word vento, meaning „wind,“ and tenere, meaning „to hold“). …‘
