In Part 5 of our conversation, @bernardjaames & @jxtheo respond to audience questions and conclude with the significance & continued relevance of Francisco “Pancho Villa” Guilledo’s story. They discuss the importance of engaging with this history to uncover the many lessons that continue to be applicable in our current times.

In Part 4 of their conversation, @bernardjaames and @jxtheo discuss the parallels between Francisco “Pancho Villa” Guilledo’s experiences, and our experiences today. Our continued resistance of many forms against colonization, commodification and racialization is an extension of what Guilledo was overcoming in his time.

In Part 3 of their conversation, @bernardjaames and @jxtheo discussed how Francisco “Pancho Villa” Guilledo fueled the radical imaginations of the Filipinos of his time. In Guilledo’s era, Filipinos had survived a genocide, the subjugation of a second colonizer, as well as violence & racism towards their migrant population. With the semi-autonomy and prominence at his disposal as a world champion, Guilledo earned an image of respect and dignity as a reclamation from the dehumanizing and racialized portrayals of White Americans. Guilledo was recognized as a warrior and a champion of his people, rather than a savage from the Eurocentric imperialist settler-colonial lens.

Part 2: Contextualizing the violence affecting Pancho Villa’s life. In this next segment, @bernardjaames contextualizes the sociopolitical climate that Francisco “Pancho Villa” Guilledo was surrounded by, as well as the violence & oppression affecting him and the Filipinos of his generation.

Pancho Villa: World Champion, 1923 book launch and community gathering part 1, with @bernardjaames and @jxtheo at the homely @kapwakulturalcenter, in collaboration with @bayaniart & @buongloob

Please enjoy part 1 of this meaningful interview between Bayanihan Boxing team members Bernard Remollino and Jean (JT) Teodoro. In this interview, they delve into Francisco “Pancho Villa” Guilledo’s life, the sociopolitical context surrounding him at the time, and how our experiences today are extensions of people like Guilledo’s experiences a century earlier – as Filipino-Americans, and as migrant people to the imperialist settler-colonial nation that is colonizing their homeland.

Thank you to our incredible village for making this possible. These kinds of breakthroughs are ancestors’ dreams come true, and are moments of reclamation for future generations to come. Much love to you all!

Two amazing events in two weekends! 💖

This friday, join @bernardjaames and @jxtheo at the homely @kapwakulturalcenter for an interactive live discussion about Francisco “Pancho Villa” Guilledo and the historical significance of the wave of US migration he was part of, soon after the US genocide on the Philippines. In this fruitful conversation, we’ll dig a little deeper into the sociopolitical climate surrounding Guilledo’s life. We’ll get personal about Dr Remollino’s process of writing and collaborating on his book Pancho Villa: World Champion, 1923; we’ll talk a little about the evolution of boxing and the sports industry as a whole; we’ll do a little demonstration on our boxing training process; and we’ll speak a bit more about what exciting projects and initiatives we have coming.

On Saturday September 13th at @elriosf , we will join @versusodds in tabling at the I Got Ur Back: Fuera Ice fundraiser. All proceeds are going to families & street vendors affected by the pinche ICE raids, and our siblings in Falasteen. Please come thru for some amazing performances, DJ’s, vendors, and of course the cause 🩵

Also, we will announce our weekly indoor East Bay boxing classes soon. stay tuned! ❤️‍🔥

Together WE are able to give the help that so many in our communities need and deserve.

The deportations of our loved ones continue the act of violence for simply existing continues. Alongside with police brutality. And this is aligned with what is happening in Palestine.
