The Case of the Ever Changing Food Trend

@jello to kimchi, a hundred years of food trends. Ted Steinebach (@vervoolofficial) on the Brooklyn seven-year-old who's never known a world where Bibimbap-Wednesday wasn't just Wednesday.

Trends go around. We eat anyway.

In solidarity with, and as part of, @falloffreedom's campaign. The new issue is now available via link in bio.

The JW Vibe: “Mody describes his relationship with touch in almost spiritual terms. “It’s everything,” he says. “I’m devoted to it, and it’s a ‘yoga’ for me when no one else is hearing me play, practice, or compose.” His compositional guide, he adds, is not the notes themselves but how the notes make him feel.

That philosophy explains why the dynamics of “Architecture of Belonging” are created without simply turning up the volume. A single plucked note can feel exposed; a sustained tone can open a larger space; a fluid run can suddenly accelerate the pulse. His attack changes, his resonance shifts and silence becomes part of the phrasing.”

Jonathan Widran, The JW Vibe:
“On his new single “Architecture of Belonging,” Noshir Mody turns his acoustic guitar into the voice of a soul searching for its place in the world. What begins with an intimate, woody murmur gradually expands into darker resonance, crystalline upper-register flights and increasingly intricate improvisations, the instrument seeming to question, reach, wrestle and ultimately find its way toward peace. Around those questing strings, Dutch vocalist, educator, psychologist and artist-preneur Vivienne Aerts creates an equally remarkable vocal universe of her own, transforming her voice into layers of shimmering harmony, breath-like atmosphere and soaring, almost orchestral color...

...It is here that the piece reveals just how naturally Mody inhabits multiple musical languages. There is the disciplined articulation associated with classical guitar, the improvisational freedom of jazz, the spaciousness of global music and the gradual intensification one might associate with progressive rock. Yet none of those elements feels pasted onto the others. They coexist because they are already part of Mody’s personal musical vocabulary. He says the piece is completely in sync with who he is today. That observation may be the most important key to the recording. His compositional aesthetic evolves because he does...

...“Architecture of Belonging” isn’t about geography or finding a physical place to call home. It’s about connection, vulnerability and the way our understanding of belonging deepens with experience.”

APPROVED FOR RELEASE.

The file is released.

The Manufactured Consent Issue is out now.

Institutions start speaking for something else. Dissent gets reframed as concern. Propaganda gets a softer name. Silence gets packaged as messaging.

We brought together writers, artists, and photographers from around the world and asked a simple question:

What happens to freedom when the systems around us quietly start shaping what we see, say, choose, and accept?

There isn't one answer in these pages. There probably shouldn't be.

Inside: fictional brands played completely straight. A republished Michael Sorkin essay on surveillance and public space. A fine-art diptych about silence. An essay on AI and book destruction. A fashion editorial built around censorship. And more.

Some of it is funny. Some of it isn't.

The politics are there, but they don't always announce themselves.

We're proud to release the issue as part of @falloffreedom , running October 2–4.

Print-on-demand will be available soon through MagCloud. Link in bio.

You have agreed to the terms.
Please do not ask what the terms were.

Slides 2 and 3 text on top: AI-assisted. The robot did the typing. The human did the worrying.

Most reviews tell you what a piece sounds like. Jonathan Widran understood why this one exists.

His new feature on Architecture of Belonging goes beneath the surface of the recording, into the questions behind it, the choices that shaped it, and the extraordinary collaboration that brought it to life with @VivienneAerts, @sargesound and @AaronNevezie.

In a world increasingly focused on what separates us, understanding what connects us — and what allows us to belong — feels more important than ever.
We’ve learned to protect ourselves by keeping the world out. Walls, thresholds, the rooms we retreat into.

“Architecture of Belonging” exposes the illusion.

Vulnerability, which in walls would be a crack, is here the architecture: we are joined to one another precisely at the places where we are unguarded.
