Over 6 transformative weeks, young people across Toronto came together to explore advocacy, and imagine futures rooted in justice, care, and connection. Together, we grew our capacity as organizers, advocates, and community builders while reimagining what it means to create change. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the first ever Cultivating Futures Lab. A group of young people and a facilitator sit around a large table filled with notebooks, pens, markers, magazine, and water bottles during a workshop session. At the center is a circular illustration with flowers, greenery, and the sun, with the letters “CFL.” The word “Recap” is written in large yellow script. At the bottom, text reads “Cultivating Futures Lab – Program Recap,” with The Rights Project logo.

Repost from @very.laod • 🗣️ 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗣 𝗥𝗢𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗜𝗭𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗬 🗣️ Too many stories of “resilient” women romanticize survival. Yes, there is beauty, power, and importance resistance, but the violent conditions that force people to fight in the first place are often diminished in celebratory stories. People have no choice but to “be resilient”, or die. It is not a choice. It is an ugly fight to choose life, justice, and the possibility of a better future in the face of death. We discuss the problem of the sanitized image of a resilient, revolutionary (Vietnamese) woman in @allpeoplesfightingoppression second zine, “Revolutionary Women History”. You can find printed copies at their upcoming events, or download a digital copy for free via the link on their profile. —————— 📸(1): 1968, Lazaro Abreu. The cover story for this Vol.II, No.24, March 3, 1969 paper featured a New Year’s address by Hồ Chí Minh. 📸(3): 1971, Emory Douglas. “Listen to them pigs banging on my door asking for rent money… they should be paying my rent”. Douglas was the Minister of Propaganda for the Black Panther Party. His art style became the visual signature for Party illustrations in publications and print. 📸(4): 1976, Adnan Al Sharif. Repost from @very.laod • ‼️ 𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 - 𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘 ‼️ 🗓️ 𝙀𝙑𝙀𝙉𝙏: 𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗟 𝗠𝗘𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 🗓️ Fifty years ago, the Vietnamese resistance war against the U.S. came to an end. April 30th 1975 was the day liberation forces reclaimed the southern capital of Sài Gòn, driving all remaining U.S. military and personnel to flee in defeat. This day represents many things. For one, it is proof of the inevitability of people’s victory in the face of not-so-invincible powers and institutions. Yet, half a century later, the physical and mental aftermath of our struggle continues to drive division, politics, and propaganda in our community. Join us for two events about revolutionary histories and futures as we commemorate this historical day and continue our collective fight against imperialism. 🎟️ Both events are free but registration is required (link in bio). This program is a counter to “Black April” events being hosted in the city on the same day. We are challenging ignorant and censorship politics in the Vietnamese community with accessible, honest, and organized conversations. ————— 📅 April 26, 2025 @ 4PM EDT 📍 Tkaronto A soft teach-in about Vietnamese revolutions, community discussions and speeches, a group reading-study activity. The whole program is in English. Masks are mandatory. The space is wheel-chair accessible with a ramp and elevator. ————— 📅 April 27, 2025 @ 10AM PDT / 1PM EDT / 6PM BST / 7PM CEST 📍 Zoom A panel of Vietnamese organizers and activists talking about how their refugee family experiences shaped their anti-fascist and anti-imperialist work. The event will be in English and Vietnamese, with live English captions. ————— The venue address and/or Zoom meeting link will be sent along with the email confirmations. If we can assist with any other accommodations for your safety and/or attendance, please specify in the registration link or send us an email.

Repost from @very.laod • 💭 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗦𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗗𝗔𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗬 💭 Initially scheduled as a post for International Day of Solidarity with Palestine, this became a deeper and more thoughtful written piece about “solidarity.” What does it mean to be “Vietnamese” and stand in “solidarity” with others today? ... with Palestine? —————— We will be publishing an article/post version of this piece (as well as previous and future texts) on our website for better access. Will link once it’s up! —————— 📸: Thieu, 1972. [Image description: In the style of Vietnamese books published in the interwar period (the mid-twentieth century). The title, “Kỷ niệm ngày quốc tế đoàn kết với nhân dân Palextin” (“Commemorating the day of international solidarity with the people of Palestine”). An illustration of a female Vietnamese guerilla fighter with a khăn rằn tied around her head stands with a sash across her body with the phrase, “nhân dân Việt Nam nhất định thắng!” (“the Vietnamese people will [be] victorious!” or, “a definite victory for the Vietnamese people!”). On either side of the woman is a border design inspired by كُوفِيَّة design. Both the khăn rằn and كُوفِيَّة are regular-wear scarves that were later adopted as symbols for resistance in their respective regions.]

Repost from @very.laod • 💭 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 “𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹” 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀𝗲? 💭 Whether you are in Vietnam or in the diaspora, “politics” is a tense subject. Even just the word “politics” is treated as taboo. (Next time you are at a gathering with Vietnamese people, say “let’s talk about politics” and see how many people will roll their eyes or straight up leave you lol). If you even consider bringing up anything about war, Vietnamese government, or communism: don’t. We grew up in this kind of environment, tip-toeing and being told even our interests in social issues were too radical. In this post, we try to answer the question of why Vietnamese youth may be discouraged to engage in politics by examining challenges to “progressiveness” such as biases/ideologies. Specifically, we look at state-led propaganda, education, and censorship—how states politicize Vietnamese identities: as (bad) communists in the West, and as loyal citizens in Vietnam; as well, we reflect on who benefits from the complicity of these kinds of identities. —————— This is an opinion piece with minimal research to help contextualize some of our points. We do not claim to speak on behalf of the Vietnamese community, we are only experts in our experiences. This page will have a mix of personal posts and informational ones! 😼 —————— [Image Descriptions, Context & Translations are in the pinned comment below post.]
