While the juniors were killing it at Junior Worlds, the open and masters team held it down at Open and Masters Flemish Regionals in Leuven!

Open Regionals was always meant to be an in-between competition without any major performance goals. With that in mind, there was little reason to push through an aggressive gut and water cut, and Stefanie decided to compete in the -57 kg category instead. A flare-up of back issues did give us one clear priority: come out of the competition healthy and, if possible, take the win.

From a nutrition perspective, the lower stakes also gave us an opportunity to experiment with a different refeed meal. Stefanie had traditionally relied on rice with scrambled eggs, but this time we had two new options to test: French toast or pasta. Over time, Stefanie learned that a relatively easy-to-digest meal with a decent amount of protein is one of the few combinations that consistently works well for her, especially following a gut and water cut. We opted for French toast with some berries, as this was already her usual weekend breakfast and therefore something familiar. The strategy worked perfectly. Stefanie made it through the entire competition without any nutrition-related issues, took the win in the -57 kg category and achieved a new Flemish bench press record in the process.

Not long afterwards, WEC was next on the schedule, this time back in the -52 kg category. A busy period and less control over several external factors made the build-up far from ideal. After plenty of discussion and some difficult decision-making, Stefanie, Jochen and I ultimately decided to stop the heavier cut rather than risk compromising the bigger goal ahead: Open Nationals.

With those external factors now becoming more manageable, we have more time to put Stefanie in a better position for that competition. Her back issues and overall health also played an important role in that decision. As a nutrition coach, these situations can be difficult: balancing what an athlete wants in the moment with what you believe is the right decision for the athlete and their longer-term goals.

I’m glad we came out of this period h
