Using a fluorescent tube lamp to manually draw and create light paintings, artist Vicki DaSilva recently created a piece in the Queen’s Marque District incorporating Tidal Beacon.

DaSilva’s light painting photographs are produced on location - her practice is a time-based art form anchored in the photographic process while incorporating performance, intervention, activism, and public art.

Recognizing the parameters of working at night and the intriguing challenge of drawing with light, her work encapsulates the fact that DaSilva’s work is non-invasive, leaving no physical trace of having existed. These temporal performances allow her to tap into the creative awareness of artistic practice and social activism.

Her work is currently on display at True Colours Art Gallery, open exclusively for guests of Muir.

My feminism:
White cis-male patriarchy is toxic and exploitative and should be torn down. It has defined social structures and measures of success in ways that serve only those committed to perpetuating it.
I object.
I resist.
I am feminist AF.

Feminism must include a rejection of fatphobia. Standards of beauty, of health, of worth, have been determined by patriarchal structures.

My feminism grows and adapts and deepens as I do. It allows me to recognize arbitrary power structures where I used to see “normalcy.” It forces me to ask “why?” a lot.

I want my feminism to be as inclusive as possible, but I recognize that I am a product of white supremicist structures that have benefited me and that I am full of biases. I hope that people in my life will help me recognize and correct those biases by calling me in when they manifest.

Our @vickidasilva photograph has returned to the wall after a long trip to the framer. I hadn’t realized how much I’d missed it. It hangs beside the coat closet, one of the last things I see when I leave the apartment. DaSilva paints with light, capturing her work with long exposure photography. This piece looks static from afar, but its real beauty is movement, depth, process. It reminds me that my resistance—against power structures, inequality, self-doubt, body negativity, succumbing to inertia—is active. That the power is in the movement, not the static moments. #resist
