Join us for an International Rosary for Mental Health Ministry this October as we come together in faith and community during the Month of the Rosary and this month’s Pope intention for mental health ministry and celebrate the feast of St. John Paul II, whose deep devotion to Mother Mary continues to inspire us.
Prayer is our first tool and weapon to cultivate our spiritual life and ask the Lord for graces and peace and comfort for the world, for our loved ones and for us. The Rosary is a prayer much beloved and recommended by saints across centuries, and by Virgin Mary herself. This international Rosary hosted by @catholicmhm will further build a global Catholic mental health community united by the Communion of the Saints and further advance the intention of the Pope to make the Church everywhere a haven of comfort that welcomes and accompanies people with mental health disorders and their loved ones towards holiness in Christ.
Join us today at 9pm ET! Link to register with local times in @catholicpsychiatrist bio and story!

Mental health belongs in faith, and faith belongs in mental health!
Rather than mutually exclusive of hostile, they need one another. We are body, mind and soul all as a unity of persons in the image of God. Mental health discussions belong and are needed in the Church and faith communities, and the Church and faith communities deserve and need to be more integrated in mental health discussions, research, and care!
At @catholicmhm we’re committed to joining this month’s Pope’s prayer and action intention for mental health ministry to bring Jesus’ love for those with mental illnesses and those who care for them in the Church. Glad to had come to the Vatican this month to celebrate World Mental Health Day with @catholicmhm and worldwide Catholic leaders and mental health experts!

What’s a Catholic Psychiatrist?
Simply put, a Catholic that happens to be a psychiatrist, and a psychiatrist that happens to be Catholic. Both Catholic and psychiatrist are inseparable parts of my identity, and I don’t like dividing aspects of my life as separate ‘identities’. I am Catholic first, chronologically (I was baptized not long after birth), and ontologically and practically (my faith and being a son of God informs all of my life and my job). I am a psychiatrist as early in my life I received a vocation to become a doctor, and while in medical school I discovered psychiatry and felt a specific call to be a doctor of the psique (soul, mind), and advance medical science and practice to help people that are often forsaken, stigmatized, and suffering invisible, difficult to understand wounds. While historically there has been some mutual hostility and misunderstanding between psychiatry and Catholicism, by people and groups that don’t understand well either, both are not only compatible but required to integrate and synergize. God gave us medicine, including psychiatry, to convey some of His healing power in an interpersonal way and as a way to show compassion for those in need. The Catholic faith helps iluminate the understanding of the human person and mind as having God-given dignity, and being both fallen by sin but also redeemed by the grace of Jesus Christ. As a Catholic psychiatrist, following the Gospel, I try to see in patients the face of Jesus, and I try to be Jesus for them.
What are your thoughts?

Every person deserves to be heard, understood, and reminded that they are not alone.

This World Mental Health Day, we look back at our gathering in Rome on 9–10 October, where clergy, pastoral ministers, mental health professionals, and people with lived experience came together with one shared mission: to build a Church rooted in hope, compassion, and healing.
