BLAST FROM THE PAST

Joined by Haines, we hiked a loop route through the Cube Iron/Silcox Roadless Area. This particular route has been on my #hike bucket list for 20 years since I first discovered the trails on a map. This loop starts at the Four Lakes basin trailhead and climbs at a good pitch to Cabin Lake. From here, we crossed a pass into the Four Lakes Basin. This place, remote and isolated, is a wonderland to hike through as you pass one small lake after another. Then, it is time to cross another small pass, and from this saddle, we ascended to the apex of Cube Iron Mountain. From the peak, we could see the Mission Mountains to the east and the mighty spires of the Cabinet Mountains on a northwest heading. From the top, we descended along a large avalanche chute and back to the trailhead. Now, it's time for a beer and dinner.

We hiked up Bass Creek this past weekend, and Radd caught a big western terrestrial garter snake. Vida wanted a shot at handling the scaly beast, and her reaction…PRICELESS

Planning to visit the #ArenalVolcano National Park?

“Here’s a short overview of the trail so you know what to expect.”

🚸The #arenal terrain is mostly flat, with the exception of the last part where you climb up to the lava flows to get to that sought-after view.

🌋However, the Volcano National Park has more to offer than just a view of the volcano.

As you follow the trail, you will be able to see how the forest has recovered from prior eruptions.

🎍Towering sugarcane (2nd image) turns to thick rainforest with epiphytes, vines, and all sorts of bromeliads dangling from tree limbs.

Eventually, you’ll end up walking on the 22 year-old volcanic rocks, climb a short, but steep, set of rustic stairs, and finally enjoy a fantastic view of the volcano and the Arenal lake.

🚶🏻‍♀️🚶The hike/walk was exceptionally easy but you’d be surprised by the number of people who balked at the bottom of the stairway.

💪🏼Please get in shape or stay in shape so you can get the most out of your vacation, so that later you can remember the view and not the agonizing struggle.

Took advantage of the warming sun and headed up to Lolo Pass for a snowshoeing loop along Glade Creek. It was warm enough to shed a few layers, and Vida took full advantage of it.
