Behind the performance: Vidisha Ahire ❤️

That opening moment was when I knew @vidisha.xx was the one for Shruti.

I cast by instinct. For me, raw talent precedes technical talent. What matters is having the love for art, the heart to be real, the ability to feel a range of emotions and bring them into the character. Vidisha is one person who has nothing but heart, and that shows in the way she gives herself to art.

She naturally has that expressive, filmy flair from her dancing and modelling background, but for Shruti, we both knew we had to go in the opposite direction. Watching her begin sculpting her performance away from what came naturally to her has been fascinating.

Our rehearsals are very raw. They’re a crucial foundational phase where we come together to not just understand the characters, but to experience them. It means sitting with intense emotions and building the trust to explore them together. There were difficult and vulnerable moments, but Vidisha completely trusted the process and trusted me, and she meant it. That’s one of the reasons I have so much adoration and respect for her.

Watching her prepare for Shruti has been one of the most meaningful parts of making Sakhi. And now, in her deepest and truest form, I present Vidisha as Shruti in Sakhi.

Sakhi, a young and ambitious Deaf woman trying to step into a life of her own; Shruti, an elder sister bearing the burden of everyone’s expectations; and Sarita, a mother who has relentlessly dedicated herself to the vow she made to hold their family together. When a traumatic event fractures the delicate balance between them, long-buried truths begin to surface, forcing all three women to confront not only what the others have endured, but how differently the same years have been seen, remembered and carried. Each is forced to look beyond those roles and encounter the women who have always existed beneath them and define what it means to become her own Sakhi.
