After the desert we headed past Erfoud and to Casa Redouane built with mud and straw using traditional techniques. The kind owner took us on a tour of the village and the almost underground dark tunnels of the old village, as well as showing us the impressive community irrigation system which the entire village maintain and take turns to use the water for their impressive date and corn crops. 🌽

In the morning storms echoed around again and the rain just caught us before arriving in Tinejdad and a room for the night. Our lovely host Majid took us for a walk to see the river in flood, the irrigation systems for the crops and the old kasbah. 🌧️

We saw the aftermath of the floods when we got to Tinghir with mud and debris in the roads. We stayed here for 2 nights and unloaded the bikes to visit the Todra Gorge in glorious sunshine (with hundreds of other tourists arriving by the bus load!). 🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️

Fingers crossed for some sunny days as we start to work our way back to the High Atlas 🤞⛰️

Our route passed through the ruins and oasis of the Draa Valley bringing us to another camp near N’Kob. Here we revised our route plans entirely and decided to take an easy route out to the desert for Steve’s birthday. 🎁 🌴🐪

100km of desert highway into a headwind to Alnif followed and nearly broke him! 💨

At Alnif we received the most wonderful generosity. We were allowed to set up our tent in the beautiful restaurant garden after dinner and in the morning were given a delicious complimentary breakfast and then warm bread and a bag of dates for our journey. 🫓⛺️🇲🇦

Another day of desert headwind for Steve’s birthday with random heavy rainstorms and plenty of camels brought us to Rissani. 🐪🌧️

Everyone here has been so kind, a 4x4 stopped to check we were ok in the downpour and previously on one of the huge climbs a car pulled over and gave us a bottle of water. We have been welcomed like friends, with mint tea, everywhere we have arrived despite looking and smelling quite bad! 🙏🇲🇦

Leaving Telouet we headed to Taznakht via Ait Benhaddou (Gladiator was filmed here at the ancient Ksar). We passed the spooky ‘Gas Haven’ abandoned film set in the desert from The Hills Have Eyes and headed up Tizi n’ Bachkoum. ⛰️

Long desert roads, massive climbs, hairpin descents and camels featured in the journey to our next camp near Agdz in a palm oasis. 🌴

With tired legs and bodies from 4 epic days of riding in the heat, storms and at altitude, we fell asleep to the chorus of frogs 🐸

Well, we nearly didn’t make it after BA cancelled yet another flight, but in the end we arrived about 8 hours later than planned, via a different airport, luckily we are here for 85 days!

We relaxed in Marrakesh for a few days before heading out into the Atlas Mountains in some questionable weather!

Thunder echoed in the mountains as we crested Tizi n’ Tichka well over 2000m and we opted to sleep inside at Telouet.

Not quite the anticipated start to our Morocco adventure 🇲🇦

The last stretch was the hardest 400+km with nearly 4000m EG I've done. A day of heat and wind to near-freezing and back to heat again, climbs on top of climbs, fatigue creeping up exponentially.

Somewhere on Tulungagung's gravel leading into Malang, I realized I probably wouldn't see Bromo in daylight either. Another heartbreak for the list — though honestly, I was just looking forward to a nap at CP3 😆

Letting go of that target gave me room to appreciate how far I'd come, to actual tears. Maybe fatigue, maybe hours of walking my bike up a volcano, maybe the cold. I don't know, but it was intense.

It was funny that the ambulance made its way down to me and I kept having to reassure them I was ok. They followed me from around the Jemplang marker to when I finally got to CP3 at 3am.

After a 45-minute nap, I rode down Ranu Pani into the most beautiful sunrise I've ever seen. Reds and oranges and the sea of clouds, hands freezing. It was everything. Maybe consolation, maybe assurance I'd made the right call at CP1 days earlier. Either way, 200km left, so I kept going.

With the lack of sleep and temperature changes, my body started to give up. Even as NC, I wanted to finish within COT if everything went right. Of course, it didn't. The heat, pain, traffic and road closures pushed it back. 40km out, I nearly booked a Grab straight to my room. But I kept pushing, knowing my team and friends were waiting, and so was a beer.

I had mixed emotions riding into Hotel Blambangan just around an hour past COT, despite everything. To this day there still are many ‘what if’s’

But there's a line that comes with the finisher's patch, one I didn't even receive, that reminded me this is all part of the adventure. (See the photo for the full line.)

Semangat followed me the whole way, from a word I didn't understand on day one, to my coach, team, old and new friends, family, and dotwatchers shouting it at me, until I finally got it: without them, I wouldn't have made it.

Until now my brevet card is still clean of any writing (even of my name), maybe a symbol of an unfinished story. We’ll definitely be back.

Which makes next year all the more interesting 🙂‍↔️
