Artist profile : What Colour is the Sacred? Anita Stallion and Vi Houssin. The Recoronation of Miss Club 200 2025-2026 Anita Stallion, 2025. Being a member of a group rooted in love relationships, resistance, and mutual care has an aura of sacredness. The queer community in Winnipeg contains multitudes, but there is a corner of it which is particularly beautiful. Anita Stallion here in a photograph taken by Vi Houssin, is a beloved Drag Queen who has been a beacon of irreverent fabulousness in the city for many years. She is an entertainer, a mentor, and champion of human rights. She is a force of love, succor, and diva power and can be witnessed in full flight at the weekly bingo night she hosts at Club 200 or at one of her legendary performances. The sacred does not necessarily elicit hushed tones and earnestness—it can be a raucous extravaganza of glamour and uninhibited gorgeousness, which has been captured here in a photograph by Vi Houssin. Anita Stallion is a drag artist based out of Treaty 1 territory in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She hails from the Métis settlement of Duck Bay which is in the shoreline of Lake Winnipegosis.  She has been performing drag for over 25 years across Canada and the United States.  Key highlights about Anita Stallion:  she has helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for local charities through performances and appearances.  She was crowned as monarch of the Snowy Owl Monarchist Society in 2001 & then again in 2007.     She is the Matriarch of Club 200, a popular queer bar in Winnipeg where she was a past Miss Club 300 & now today is reigning once again. She is a proud member of the Bannock Babes, an Indigenous drag collective that has just celebrated their 7 year anniversary.  She is recognized for her contributions to the 2SLGBTQ+ community & is thrilled to continue to let in different projects through her art form. @anitastallionywg @vihoussin Artist profile : What Colour is the Sacred? Elma, 2023; Anita, 2024; Jennine, 2023; The Strangers, 2021; Nipple Pasties, 2024 Nipple Pasties II, 2026 Vi Houssin Honour matriarchs. ‘These three portraits depict Métis women and femmes in my life who have taught me so much about what it means to be Métis and what it means to be a woman in our culture. They are Anita Stallion, a Winnipeg drag legend; Jennine Krauchi, a master beadwork artist; and Elma Houssin, my grandmother. Historically, most photos and artworks featuring Métis folks are of men, like Louis Riel and Gabriel Dumont. By choosing to bead only portraits of women, I am honouring these matriarchs, their legacies and the importance of Métis women in our culture.’ artalive.mawa.ca ‘My work explores the conventions of beadwork as an artistic medium, and as an expression of my Indigeneity. I use both a traditional Métis two-needle stitch method as well as off-loom beadweaving in my work to honour my Michif heritage and contribute to the proud craft of my ancestors. I seek to continue the legacy of contemporary Indigenous artists who affirm that our craft is art, not just artefact, and challenge the fiction that Métis art and culture are sedentary.’ vihoussin.ca #2SLGBTQIAplusContemporaryArt #ViHoussin #MétisContemporaryArt #🏳️‍⚧️ContemporaryArt #🏳️‍🌈ContemporaryArt
