Tales from the 2166: BEN NGUYEN

Owner of the beloved Vietnamese BBQ restaurant @haiaulangnuong in Canley Vale, Ben Nguyen is a collector, dreamer, poet, performer, community leader, family man and artist, all rolled into one. As a one-man army, Ben fills his two-storey restaurant with handcrafted objects and artworks he makes in his studio beside the restaurant’s register. On any given Friday night, you might find him tinkering away at his next poem-sculpture hybrid, directing his kitchen staff or performing a sweet Vietnamese melody on the sidewalk with his best friend on guitar. As if channeling Bruce Lee, Ben has a way of dropping wisdom that is impossible to forget. TALES FROM THE 2166 follows Ben through the many roles he inhabits, exploring the person behind one of Canley Vale’s much-loved local institutions.

The premiere screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers, writer and researcher Sheila Ngọc Phạm @birdpham, curator and artist Gillian Kayrooz @gilliankayrooz, and participant Ben Nguyen.

‘TALES FROM THE 2166’, is a documentary series exploring Vietnamese-Australian life in Cabramatta and Canley Vale – the heart of postcode 2166. Created by art collective VŨTRỤ inc. and commissioned for Powerhouse Parramatta. The series follows community figures, small businesses and cultural practices across the South Western Sydney postcode area. Featuring celebrated voices including chef and artist Ben Nguyen, jeweller and seamstress Mai Anh Nguyễn, singer and MC Cẩm Hằng Lương, hairdresser Khoa Đăng Phạm and the temple community of Họ Đạo Cao Đài Sydney.

We have been working on this project from early last year and are now so excited to share five short films with our community here in Sydney, it’s truly such an honour to platform a wealth of Viet excellence at the museum.
