“But the thing about remembering is that you don't forget.” –Tim O’Brien
On August 4, 2020, over two thousand tons of ammonium nitrate exploded in the port of Beirut. The catastrophe claimed more than 200 lives, injured thousands of people and heavily destroyed buildings in the city. This happened on top of the socio-political struggles the city has been facing and during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Is this traumatic tragedy and worth recounting? Is it something to memorialize?
Architecture is said to be among the most palpable of all the arts because there is an active encounter. Places like memorials have an enduring and profound impact on humans. The Pillars of Hope is a memorial that commemorates the August 4 blast in ways that are communicative to those who lived through it and those who know little or nothing about the tragedy. “Memory sites” designed to be part of our daily lives increase social information transfer (Gurler and Ozer, 2012). The Pillars do not merely romanticize loss and death nor stand as a “traumascape”. The proposed memorial is not an “iconic” monument so prominent or outlandish that it might lead to the conception that commemoration is only a once-a-year event or a ceremony exclusive to a certain group—if not a white elephant.
The memorial is integrated into the built environment and daily life of the citizens, ultimately influencing social memory and identity. The tragedy is part of the city’s narrative and it needs to be recorded and remembered. The Pillars are not something to look at but to be experienced. It is an inclusive place that welcomes all people who come to deal with death, loss and grief. It is a space where the people, as a community, can honor the deceased and support one another as they move forward together. The memorial is a testament to how the city is healing, recovering, and becoming stronger than ever.
