DRONE DIARIES – A Performance by Katrina E. Bastian 📅 12. - 15. November 📍 CANK 🔗 Tickets via link in bio A diary used to be the most private of records. Now we keep it in public: we post, share, and hand over our likes, habits, and relationships, while platforms turn our entries into profit. Surveillance capitalism and the surveillance state want the same thing: to know us completely. Drone Diaries stages a surveillance apparatus mid-operation. Five agents move through the second floor of CANK: Web Crawler, Ping, Cookie, Link, and Shadowban. Their operating systems are an examination of contemporary data extraction and the “Operativer Vorgang OV” (surveillance procedure) of the Stasi (the former East German secret police). What happens when this surveillance apparatus decides to rebel against its own code? When Web Crawler and Ping stage a coup against Shadowban's reign? Will Cookie reveal their secret before Link opens a portal? Drone Diaries is a performative examination of whether our humanity can win out over the apparatus, and of what we are willing to sacrifice in order to protect our privacy. This week five years ago I was asked to join @obeyclothing. Getting on board this brand that has accompanied me since my teenage years of wack graffiti and big dreams was the ultimate proof for me to follow the path I chose many years ago. I had worked with many big brands before, but for the first time I could really bring in creativity, vision and of course all the business knowledge I acquired since I started working in retail in 2008. Way too much stuff is missing in this post, but this is a little glimpse into the projects I could produce and work on during this time (Over 25 events, over a dozen campaign shootings and video productions and of course all the sales appointments.) I’m sure some of you have noticed the moves we at OBEY have been doing over the last years and I am very proud to have introduced and re-introduced this brand and its principles to many people. Some of the most interesting and creatives minds that are making big moves in this country have stepped foot in our showroom / Art Space and are wearing our brand now proudly… During those five years I could work with and meet people I have looked up to and wanted to work with for many years and I have met new people and friends, always expanding our circle. Always learning. Always listening. Everything I’m doing is build on trust and good relationships. I am thankful for every magazine, creative and store we are working with or have worked with in the past. If you ever met me you might know that I live by the principles of the Inca: AMA SUA, AMA LLULLA, AMA QUELLA (“Do not steal, do not lie, do not be lazy”). If you ever meet me, you know that there is no bullshit involved. Thank you to @chubby_stoutenbeek and @nicogoerhardt for getting me on board. I’ll never forget that. Thank you to @madeleinemachold, the most creative mind I‘ve ever met, for always having my back and being the reason why the Berlin showroom nowadays is a dream made out of red carpets and sexy leather furniture. The Last Years All photos taken by me with either my Sony Lumix or my Canon Zoom Prima between 2021 and 2024. I once planned to turn this into a print zine only in number for the people featured, all whom have been very inspiring, and of course are very cherished by me. Some photos have already been released in print or online for magazines like Chrome and i-D, some are bts from projects, some are quick shots that have been shot months and long distances apart, but make a lot of sense next to other ones, some are just incredible people, all of them are moments and feelings I don’t want to forget. Unfortunately I never put it in print. But I still have the two photo albums I bought to make up my mind about arrangement. Here they are.
