A diary used to be the most private of records. Now we keep it in public: we post, share, and hand over our likes, habits, and relationships, while platforms turn our entries into profit. Surveillance capitalism and the surveillance state want the same thing: to know us completely.

Drone Diaries stages a surveillance apparatus mid-operation. Five agents move through the second floor of CANK: Web Crawler, Ping, Cookie, Link, and Shadowban. Their operating systems are an examination of contemporary data extraction and the “Operativer Vorgang OV” (surveillance procedure) of the Stasi (the former East German secret police).

What happens when this surveillance apparatus decides to rebel against its own code? When Web Crawler and Ping stage a coup against Shadowban's reign? Will Cookie reveal their secret before Link opens a portal?

Drone Diaries is a performative examination of whether our humanity can win out over the apparatus, and of what we are willing to sacrifice in order to protect our privacy.
