Juhu! Come all, for Gantantra Garba! Why ? Coz Traditionally, Garba was a women only dance that celebrated the Garb or the Womb. An earthen pot kept in the middle, women danced to the tunes of folksongs that they sang - to celebrate fertility, sexuality, sensuality and reproduction. In the 1970s men appropriated this dance celebration, replacing folksongs with pre recorded songs that played from loudspeakers, commercialising, privatising and co opting the centre stage from women. Ironically, it is navratri season, and as you can see, the irony of praying to the Goddess while brutalising, violating and assaulting women everyday, every where in the country is not lost on the citizens of India. The garba grounds that are now private, commercial affairs run and capitalised by men, that allow entry only on certain religious and caste basis, are as far from its true value as posible. So let's reclaim what was once ours. The joy, the pleasure, the celebration The Dance for democracy Reclaiming our right to public space - to dance and to dissent — freely, safely, and without fear. Through Gantantra Garba we reclaim our constitutional values through the circle of garba: dancing our resistance, joyfully claiming public space, and signalling our right to public life. Inviting all women and queer folks in the Juhu/Vile Parle/Andheri area to come for this. We will sing our songs, dance to our own beats and sway our bodies as we feel like. Against the demons of our times, in joy and solidarity. A big shout out to the Why Loiter Campaign's media team for being at it with so much passion, love and joy. #whyloitermumbai #whyloitercampaign #whyloitermovement #whyloiter

We refuse to grow up. We giggle like 7 year olds Write for 10 year olds or 2 year olds. Make poop puns and laugh at fart. Get fascinated by train stations and are in awe of snakes. Have just come back home after @bookaroolitfest in Delhi and then in Bhopal. And schools and meetings and chatter. Met and re-met wonderful people who work passionately in the children books industry since many, many years. Realised that I’m part of this wonderful weird too. (Bhopal was beautiful. Thanks Swati and Venkatesh for bringing me along!) Since I’ve already been tagged in all the posey photos, posting the weird stuff i did. After all, isn’t that what children festivals are all about? Are you part of the tribe that refuses to grow up?

My favourite part of the Bookaroo Literature Festival, after telling stories to children, is soaking in everything else the festival has to offer. Attending workshops and sessions, meeting authors, illustrators and fellow storytellers, catching up with old friends, making new ones, and of course, buying books and getting them signed by the authors for all the kiddos in the family.

Writers have their words and artists have their art. So, using the best tools at our disposal, a bunch of us kid lit authors and creators from India, have worked on an anthology of stories, poetry and art for a better world. The brain child of @vaishaliwrites who took the initiative, brought us all together, and saw it through till the end despite several personal hiccups, the book has the work of various writers from @paroanand @shabnamminwalla @vinithastories, @mamtanainy @janedesuza @lubaina.bandukwala @a_naturalists_column @ @nandita.dacunha @ashanemaiah @jerrypinto @mandirashah @sunila.gupte @shyamala.shanmugasundaram and others; artwork by several artists from @kripa_illustrator to @ruchi.mm to @liklalall @summer_scribbles @green_humour , and much warmth, compassion, hope and empathy. Just what the doctor ordered for the times we live in. The cover is by Vaishali's very talented son. I have contributed a poem to this collection. If you feel disillusioned and low by all that's going on, perhaps this may lift you up. It is available on amazon to read on a kindle reader. #hope #empathy #mallikaravikumar #kidlitindia
