[Thillana series 1/5] 🦚

“You, the great son of Uma, ride the majestic peacock, accompanied by your consorts. You, whose beauty cannot be compared to a 100 manmathas(Cupids), are worshipped by all. Why this delay to come grace me with your presence? Is it fair?”
.
Presenting the charanam of a beautiful thillana composition in ragam Kamas by Late Lalgudi Jayaraman. This is a classical fusion rendition by @indianraga 💙💚💜

Leela - Kuchipudi Dance

Link in bio

This Kuchipudi Dance is part of the Washington D.C. Group Fellowship series and is performed by dancers from Kalanidhi Dance from Maryland.

This dance effortlessly melds the rhythmic variations of Kuchipudi with the different layers within the modern musical composition. The dancers showcase both brisk footwork and graceful hand gestures while moving through abstract formations. This piece, showcasing the intricate "nritta" or pure dance aspect of Kuchipudi, was choreographed by Ankitha Durvasula and performed by herself, Sahiti Rachakonda, and Pragnya Thamire.

The music is Krshna Leela by @vinodsmusic
and was used with permission.

‘Carnatic’ music is the ancient music of India which is believed to be undiluted by foreign influences of Arabic and Iranic languages developed during the late 12th and early 13th century (some claim that its origins are much older).

Carnatic Music is thoroughly oriented to the range of voice, interestingly even the instruments in this genre mimic characteristics of vocal music. It explores raga and tala evoking rasa in the performer and listener. The Carnatic repertory consists of a vast number of composed pieces, kriti or kirtana are particularly popular. Kritis are complex devotional songs, popularised in the 16th-20th centuries.

Although much of Carnatic music is in praise of Gods and Goddesses, there are compositions on nature, emotions and way of life. A classic Carnatic vocal concert can include many song forms within the same recital and performed with a small ensemble of instruments like violin/veena/flute for melody, mridangam/ghatam/kanjira/morsing/konnakol for rhythm, and the tambura which acts as a drone throughout.

The chief centres of present day Carnatic music in India include: Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala. But it cannot be undermined that Carnatic music has spread its wings across the globe and now there are various iconic artists and producers who are excelling in this artform outside of its home in India. It makes us proud to say that at @indianraga we have been able to support and develop many artists who are venturing into the world of Carnatic music.
