Saranga evokes two qualities for me: Sthiram (stability) and Sukham (ease). A casual chai-time chat with my wife turned into a deep dive into this mystical raga, inspiring a day steeped in its serene essence.

Though not often spotlighted in concerts, Saranga shines in masterpieces like Shri. Muthuswami Dikshitar’s Arunachala Natham, a Pancha Bhoota kriti that embodies the Agni (fire) element at Arunachalam.

To me, Saranga is as mystical as Kalyani given its derived from Kalyani itself—perhaps even more enigmatic. I like to think of it as “cool fire.” Maybe it’s the interplay of its two Madhyamams that gives it that grounded, luminous feel. by @vinodsmusic

Of Goats & Glaciers: Wildlife in the Rockies

We stopped to view a few glaciers and found mountain goats lounging around by the river. They have a curious face. This particular mama goat seemed tired of paparazzi, gave us a side eye 😒 and walked away in a gentle huff with her baby. (We were at a safe distance, pics zoomed in). 🐐

Rule #1 of being in the mountains - respect the wildlife and let them be wild. Do not pet, do not feed. Maintain distance.

Feeding wildlife is dangerous for them because they get used to humans and start venturing into human habitats. Then they will be treated as a threat and shot. All because some stupid humans decided to be “nice” to them. They know how to scour for their food.

Always drive at speed limits and being cognizant that at points the wildlife may cross the busy highway. Traffic usually slows down when bears or mountain goats cross. We spotted a few elks too.

One of the treks we were planning on going, was temporarily closed because a female elk was getting fierce and rampaging onto hikers. It happens. The elk calving season is from mid-May to early July. During that time, female elk are very defensive of their young and will strike if they feel threatened.

Where there are clearly marked signs for hiking in groups - respect that. You don’t want to be fighting a bear alone🐻

I was nervous about running into bears on a hike but wished do see one on the roadside where I could see it from safety.

This land is their home and you are a guest. Behave as such. These are lessons I learned. by @vinodsmusic

Walk up and as you turn the corner to the view point… suddenly the color slaps you across the face and you suck your breath in at just how unbelievable this place is.

It’s like Creation went on a frenzy in the Rockies, pulled all stops to bring nothing short of Her A game. To paint a canvas that will leave you stunned from one moment to the next.

You think you have been amazed enough and then that next turn She shows you something even more unbelievable and then when you stand there with mouth wide open - She watches and smiles at how naive you are.

To think you have seen it.

“No” She says. “Just you wait”

Oh Rockies, you bring out the wordsmith in me.

Poetry aside - water leaving the glacier brings rock and silt. While the silt settles to the bottom, fine particles of rock ground to the texture of baking flour remain suspended in the water. This “rock flour” scatters the blue-green rays of light giving the lake its stunning color. by @vinodsmusic

Standing atop the Athabasca glacier, estimated to be between 13,000 to 18,000 years old.

It is 6 km square spread out and about as thick (deep) as the Eiffel Tower!

The water from this glacier reaches 3 different oceans and supplies freshwater to Canada as well as the US.

Wanted to do something magical today on our anniversary so we drove from Banff to Jasper national park with breathtaking scenery, towering snow capped mountains for the entire ride- and stopped to explore this glacier on the way. V absolutely enjoyed it - so it was all worth it. by @vinodsmusic

This piece of heaven on earth looks like a wallpaper any direction you turn. Canada, you beauty.

I walked bowing down within me to the indegenous people of this land, who probably lived like an extension of the mountain itself.

Tulsidas realizes there is nothing equivalent to compare young Shri Ram’s innocence as a baby, except his face alone. What this Tulsidas bhajan, and scores of other devotional compositions rooted in Hinduism, is the devotee can and has expressed their love and devotion through various relationships they take with their deity - a baby here to Tulsidas, a divine lover with Mirabai and Andal, a parent for Kalidasa or Thyagaraja (Seethamma Maayamma), and as the ultimate possibility to dissolution for several other composers including Dikshitar, Syama Sastri, Purandaradasa, Papanasam Sivan, Muthaiya Bhagavathar. The list goes on. You can choose your path, you just have to dissolve.

This is a project that is close to my heart. An opportunity to vocalize the joy that a billion Hindus across the world are feeling as they welcome Maryada Purush Shri Ramachandra murthy back to Ayodhya.

When I was approached by @worldhinducouncilvhpa to make the music for this project, I was obviously thrilled but also aware of the challenge that comes with it.

How does one do justice to capture the pride, the delirious celebration, the overwhelming joy bordering on sheer ecstasy of having waited for 500 years to welcome Prabhu Shri Ram back?

The Prana Prathishta at Ayodhya on Jan 22 will be an awakening. The result of Tapas and sacrifice. Hope this lights the fire of longing in the hearts of Hindus across the globe to aspire for the ultimate truth - oneness with the Divine.

The song titled Shree Ram ka Swagat is on all major audio streaming platforms. This song also features my youngest collaborator, a 4yr old who has given voice to a powerful victory chant welcoming Shree Ram. Prabhu Shri Ram is a living presence not just for us but also for generations to come.

The song begins by celebrating Prabhu Shri Ram, Ma Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman returning to Awadh (Ayodhya), victorious from the battle.

The one who was separated for years from his mother and motherland is returning to rule his Rajya .

Mother Earth, who is longing to bear Bhagwan, is welcoming him with all the auspiciousness.

Sempoove poove - Only @priyadarshan.official can think of such a cast. We didn’t have a Pan-Indian film that often back then. When I saw @mohanlal and @tabutiful paired together, it was such an unexpected cast and they were splendid together. While the film also showed India’s freedom struggle and the atrocities, this film was among the earlier times when I started appreciating re-recording. @ilayaraja_official is a master orchestrator and composer! And Vaali who can make the sensual into the most poetic.
