Known as the ‘Class Daydreamer’ in high school, illustrator Samantha Rothenberg dabbled with a 9-5 job before transitioning to being a full-time artist. Her school would coddle children who excelled at maths and science, and had very little to offer to children who were more artistically inclined. “I really internalized the message that there wasn’t a place for me at school or in the world at large. This frustrated me, and I did not see much point in even trying. I spent a lot of high school just sitting in the back of classrooms, doodling and imagining my own world. I was often teased for it and my classmates voted me as the ‘Class Daydreamer’.” Even after school, things weren’t easy. She was once advised by someone that since there are already many illustrators out there, she should try doing something else.

"He looked up at the empty clouds, and as he died he wondered, not for the first time but for the very last, why it should be that we are made for a bright world, but live in a dark one."

- Lev Grossman, The Bright Sword

Happy Birthday @violetclair!

Samantha has been a part of the Bright Side family from its very first day back in 2021 and we are so honored to call her a friend. It’s been wonderful watching her grow and transform over the years - personally, professionally and creatively. We hope you have the best day, Samantha, and we look forward to many more reasons to celebrate you in the future! 💜

March went by fast, but now there’s a whole April here. Like, right here!

March recap by photo:
1) a reminder time is weird but ongoing
2) my cup on my bachelorette trip (both physically and metaphorically filled!)
3) a kind honor for my book from @jointertulia
4) a few of my favorite reads from the past month (“Full of Myself” by @siogallagher is out tomorrow and “Puzzled” by @thefakepan is out 4/16!)
5) a perfect tile, seen on a sunny walk
6) my favorite hat (and a successful .5 camera selfie!)
7) a wild number of pink books c/o @avery_books
8) a tea date with my art pal @violetclair
9) an episode of the Bachelor, viewed from my friend Ryan’s cozy living room (not pictured: my unbridled adoration for @joeygraziadei )
10) the most unsettling likeness I’ve seen of myself yet

DAY 13

Happy Galentine’s Day!

We are showcasing some of our favorite Pop Ups from the last few years to inspire and learn more about what makes a Pop Up great.

Step into the unconventional world of Violet Clair's "Better Off Alone" exhibition, brought to you by Parasol Projects in 2020. This innovative showcase challenged the traditional Valentine's Day narrative with a series of events celebrating self-love and independence.

Throughout the week-long Pop Up, there were some incredible self-love/ anti-valentines day events like a Flower Class, an Anti-Valentine’s Day Party, and a 51 First Dates x Violet Clair Valentine’s Day Panel discussion, attracting lots of attendees.

Parasol Projects is NYC’s Premier Full-Service Pop Up Agency. We offer turn-key retail and gallery spaces.

A highlight of my 2020 that also accurately represents how the rest of it went 🖕

Putting on @violetclair’s 1st show with @lizzkellyy was a moment where everything felt aligned – right before it all came undone. Felt like I’ve hit some of my lowest lows this past year, and while I appreciate the good things it has shown, I’m also giving myself permission to grieve & process what I need to. Telling myself I’m still here and that in itself is a good enough accomplishment.

I’m grateful to feel anything at all. I know it will feed into the better year ahead.
