Join us on Saturday, Oct 17th and Sunday, Oct 18th, 12pm-6pm, during Gowanus Open Studios @artsgowanus for the opening celebration of Ten Years of Brooklyn Lace Guild! Ten Years of Brooklyn Lace Guild marks an innovative, contemporary lace exhibition of the artist-members of Brooklyn Lace Guild. This exhibition traces the arc of lacemaking as a contemporary practice and demonstrates the guild’s growth from ten attendees at their first meeting in 2016 to over 100 members today. The works honor the history of lace, the lacemakers, and their stories. The artists integrate and expand on traditional processes through a diverse, multifaceted, present-day lens. This Mortal Coil A few moments from the opening night of my first curatorial project. Bringing together artists working across textile, fiber, sculpture, and mixed media, the exhibition reflects on memory, nostalgia, homeland, the body, cultural belonging, and the ways we carry these things with us. I’m super excited to share This Mortal Coil, a group exhibition I’ve had the pleasure of curating for New York Textile Month @newyorktextilemonth The exhibition began with a reflection on nostalgia—not simply as a longing for the past, but as something carried through the body, material, memory, and our relationships to home. This Mortal Coil brings together artists whose works move through ideas of homeland and diaspora, cultural belonging, bodily awareness, comfort, transformation, and decay. Through two- and three-dimensional works across a range of disciplines and media, the exhibition considers the ways materials can hold personal and collective histories—and how making can become a way of remembering, preserving, questioning, and transforming them. Here are a few highlights of the wonderful work, with more photos and details about the artists coming soon 🕸️ Image 1: Layla Nk What Should She Do If A Snake Desires Her (Step Four) 2026 Linen 15.5 in x 28 in  /  39 in x 71 in The Babylonian Talmud, the second most important ancient text in Judaism, contains a discussion of the age-old question: If a woman encounters a snake and suspects he is sexually attracted to her, what should she do? The wise sages offer three solutions. But what if none of them work and the snake has managed to fulfill its lust and crawl into her body? The Talmud responds with this final step: She must be naked, legs spread open, directly over a pot of grilled fatty meats, wine, and spices - and once the snake is seduced and leaves her body, it must be immediately grabbed by tongs and thrown into the fire, as he is destined to otherwise forever desire her. The lace depicts this final stage, a narrative testing the limits of sacred tests, mythology, and absurd sexual symbolism.
