What Should She Do If A Snake Desires Her (Step Four)

The Babylonian Talmud, the second most important ancient text in Judaism, contains a discussion of the age-old question: If a woman encounters a snake and suspects he is sexually attracted to her, what should she do? The wise sages offer three solutions. But what if none of them work and the snake has managed to fulfill its lust and crawl into her body? The Talmud responds with this final step: She must be naked, legs spread open, directly over a pot of grilled fatty meats, wine, and spices - and once the snake is seduced and leaves her body, it must be immediately grabbed by tongs and thrown into the fire, as he is destined to otherwise forever desire her. The lace depicts this final stage, a narrative testing the limits of sacred tests, mythology, and absurd sexual symbolism. by @violetmenace

Ground Ensemble: Human-Scale Bobbin Lace Performance
OPEN CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

2 PM, Old Stone House in Park Slope, Brooklyn - at the Kings County Fiber Festival

In this performance, participants will collaboratively weave a large scale bobbin lace ground by moving across the landscape while carrying long strands of threads around their torsos. The performance will last approximately 60 minutes, with workshop rehearsals on the day of, as well as one week prior to the event. We ask that participants attend at least one of these rehearsals in addition to participating in the workshop performance itself. Performance supplies will be provided.

Rehearsal Workshop (40 min Sessions, Attend One)
October 4th (afternoon, exact time tbd) - on Governor’s Island
October 11th at 1 PM - at the Kings County Fiber Festival taken in Old Stone House of Brooklyn by @violetmenace

One year since I visited Bobowa 🕸️
My research (quest) of pre-WWII Polish Jewish bobbin lacemaking brought me to study lace with the amazing Ewa Szpila, visit the international lace festival and the town's Jewish sites.

In 2023 I travelled to Warsaw to see the site where the hot house used to be. It's now a parking lot. Then at the @neonmuzeum , a museum of cold-era (communist) neon signs, I met the public library neon mermaid. After my grandparents escaped and the hothouse burnt down, Grójecka 81 became a public library, and this was its neon (my grandmother, too, became a librarian). Most of Warsaw's neon was destroyed, but this mermaid and only one other survived, and now lives in the museum.
