On view at the gallery! TAÍNA H. CRUZ Pixie Theatre Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, Berlin 10.09.2026–07.11.2026 Taína H. Cruz works at the threshold where socially shared registers of recognition become enigmatic. Bodies shift shape, familiar sites are estranged from their habitual meanings, and ordinary encounters take on supernatural qualities. The recognizable is not abandoned so much as made unstable. Humor is central to this process, appearing through mischief, exaggeration, and absurdity. It complicates the unease that permeates the work, allowing tension and uncertainty to coexist with levity and beauty. Folklore and fantasy function similarly: rather than constituting an elsewhere opposed to reality, they extend lived experience and memory beyond the limits of the immediately real. Image: Taína H. Review of Pixie Theatre by TAíNA H. CRUZ in Frieze: Taína H. Cruz Finds Power in the Grotesque by Susan Finlay 2 October 2026 (...) The exhibition brings together a diverse range of female figures in newly commissioned paintings, with references ranging from folklore to children’s book illustrations and Old Master paintings. Cruz’s subjects – rendered with oils and pastels in loose brushstrokes and a grungy junk-shop palette of greys, yellows, reds and browns – appear in a variety of real and imaginary spaces. The artist’s animated short film Pollen (all works 2026), meanwhile, functions as a preface to the other pieces: in it, women wander through a dystopian vision of a New York filled with empty office blocks, corporate cafes and supernatural portals that lead... nowhere. Its video game-style collage of dreamy, derivative imagery sets the tone for a show that purposefully avoids a clear narrative (...) For our 2026 Benefit Exhibition and Auction, "The World Is The Work," we invited 14 guest curators to present a selection of works on paper by artists they admire. "These five artists (Catherine Murphy, Shirley Jaffe, Vivian Browne, Taína H. Cruz, and Romany Eveleigh), born between 1923 and 1998, have opened up new ways of seeing for me," writes guest curator Julia Trotta @julia_trotta, "Each has a singular and fiercely committed practice, expanding the possibilities of image making through radical approaches to both process and representation." More than 150 works on paper are now available to bid via the link in our bio, and will be on view in our galleries from October 8-11, concluding with a ticketed party on October 13.

EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS: "Pixie Theatre" by Taína H. Cruz at Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler 📍 How do folklore, fairy tales, and digital culture shape our perception of identity and memory? Pixie Theatre, the second solo exhibition by American artist Taína H. Cruz currently on view at Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler in Berlin, invites viewers into a painterly universe where reality seamlessly dissolves into fantasy. Drawing on African American and Caribbean traditions while blending them with the visual codes of contemporary networked culture, Cruz turns the gallery space into a theatrical realm of constant transformation. Her works resist linear storytelling, favoring an atmosphere that is fluid, uncertain, and dreamlike. The paintings and drawings on view recall the technical mastery and dramatic chiaroscuro of Old Master traditions, only to subvert them through digital distortions, expressive brushwork, and eerie, fairytale-like figures. Through shapeshifting bodies, supernatural occurrences, and intense light play, Cruz explores the figure not as a static image, but as a dynamic site of becoming. Exhibition Details: Artist: Taína H. Cruz Exhibition: Pixie Theatre Venue: Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, Berlin Dates: September 10 – November 7, 2026 Weaving together playfulness, tension, and art-historical gravitas, Pixie Theatre challenges us to reconsider the boundaries between the immediately real and the power of myth. If you were to describe your journey through the lens of myth or folklore, which character or symbol would represent you? Let us know in the comments! 👇 @virtualtai @kraupatuskanyzeidler #tourberlin #travelerslovetolearn #arttoursberlin #berlinexhibition

On view at the gallery! TAÍNA H. CRUZ Pixie Theatre Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, Berlin 10.09.2026–07.11.2026 (...) This temporal instability extends to Cruz’s treatment of the body. Digital distortion and painterly intervention converge upon the figure, producing bodies that appear material and mediated. The hyperreal and the mythopoetic are not presented as opposing terms, but as interdependent modes through which contemporary subjectivity is displayed and produced. The body becomes a site of inscription: shaped by inherited narratives, circulating images, memory, fantasy, and the material contingencies. Images: exhibition view, Taína H. „Pixie Theatre“ does not tell linear stories. Instead, the paintings feel like glimpses into a larger unfolding narrative, revealing neither a clear beginning nor an end. Familiar places, figures, and situations appear transformed, mysterious, or fairy tale-like. Humor, exaggeration, and absurdity coexist with moments of uncertainty and unease. In her paintings, Cruz combines references to art history with a contemporary visual language. Her figures appear both real and altered, shaped by memory, imagination, and digital imagery. The exhibition explores how we perceive images and how identity is continually formed and reformed through memory, fantasy, and encounters with others. #tainácruz #ContemporaryPainting #ArtExhibition #VisualCulturetainácruz

A recap of the past two weeks in NYC and DC. Visited the Whitney Biennial. Some of my favorite works were by Kamrooz Aram, Anna Tsouhlarakis, Cooper Jacoby, Taína H. Cruz, Leo Castañeda, and Pat Oleszko. I will visit it again to reflect on the interpretations of the works shown. Stop by before it ends on August 23. At Wright, a piece by Maria Martins is headed to auction next month. I have always loved seeing her works in Rio de Janeiro and at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. It’s at the top of my wishlist. I’m drawn to her slightly menacing sculptures that draw from Amazonian myth yet resist clean interpretation. Chris ‘Daze’ Ellis’ Orchid Rain on the Underground exhibit at the PPOW Gallery. One of my favorite exhibitions recently. I’m especially drawn to how it holds the grit of New York City alongside the beauty of some of my favorite flowers. I appreciated the tributes to iconic NYC institutions and figures such as Martha Cooper, Charlie Ahearn, and Martin Wong. The works carry both weight and lightness at once, with a strong level of detail. Highly recommend making a stop. On view until April 25. Louise Bourgeois’ Gathering Wool exhibit at Hauser & Wirth. On view until April 18. Michael Heizer’s Negative Sculpture exhibit at Gagosian. No longer on view but worth noting for its emphasis on absence as structure. In DC, I stopped at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and enjoyed coming across Lygia Pape, Flora Yukhnovich, and a Jean-Michel Basquiat x Banksy presentation. I spent time with my dear friends. Celebrated cherry blossom season before peak bloom around the Tidal Basin. #nyc #dc #modernart #contemporaryart
