Neighbourhood Diaries Part ii-A

Singapurrrraaaaaa. Singapore. My Mother Land (kind of!).

Singapore is so good it gets two posts - not just because its where my Mother was born and raised for the first 6 months of her life, but because in 2024 I had the absolute serendipitous pleasure of being able to visit twice within 2.5 months!

So this is for my first visit - alongside @non_brewed_condiment for two amazingly sweaty shows! Huge thanks to @musicmatterstome for inviting me to represent NZ alongside @whoshotscott and @balubrigada 💚💙x♥️🖤

My parents were meant to visit Singapore for the first time for my mothers 60th birthday- but covid cancelled those plans. As soon as I told them I’d been invited to perform and I had accepted the invitation; they were looking for flights and came with us! That was so so special for my Mum to see where her parents and older sister lived, she even visited the street/home that they lived in back in the start of the ‘60s.

Even more special, my manager/mentor Scott and his gorgeous daughter Scout made the trip too.

But what was crazy was that Scott had already found @masiaone almost exactly 3 months earlier (and she laid down her fire verse straight away as she believed in this song so much), but she also just happened to be visiting Singapore at the same time as Music Matters and so we were able to meet IRL for the first time and share some really special moments (and really late nights) with her on the town.

What’s even crazier is the second time I was to visit was to film her parts of the Neighbourhood video with her and the timing on that was crazy too… more in the next post!

7498. “My M.O. is I’m happiest when I’m learning about something and making something from it. And maybe a third leg now, as I’m discovering, is telling people about it too.”

Throughout his life, Paul Meyers has collected a myriad of experiences to learn from. After spending one year at @syracuseu and hating it, he left and joined his friends on a road trip from Chicago to Alaska.
-
“They only went to the very southernmost tip of Alaska, which is a town called Ketchikan. I left them there and flew to Anchorage…and ended up being there for a year and a half, and I ended up working on a ship for 7 months in the Bering Sea.”
-
After working as a merchant marine and a volunteer fireman and living in a teepee, Paul hitchhiked back to Chicago, and then completed his Filmmaking studies at @hampshirecollege. He made documentaries for USAID, which led him to D.C. where he worked for international broadcasters.
-
However, after moving to the Bay Area and making films for tech companies like @apple, Paul opened his own business in Singapore and made commercials for companies like @motorola and @intel. He then worked on educational CD-ROMs back in the U.S. and Vietnam, but moved back to Singapore and eventually started one of the earliest Asian internet companies.
-
“We went from 4 of us to 650 of us, $100 million or so in funding, and then going public on NASDAQ on what is still the second worst day in the history of NASDAQ. It was April 2000.”
-
Fortunately, he redeemed himself by then starting and selling what became the largest distributor of mobile games in Southeast Asia, and had a team in Thailand, which ultimately led him to move there!
-
After raising his 3 kids in Singapore, Paul moved to Bangkok 3 years ago, and now he’s enjoying an intentional mix of coaching, cooking, working out and playing his guitar! So great to meet you, @visionthing!
