Some places feel strangely familiar, even when you’ve never been there before.

That’s how Onomichi felt to me.

The shimmering sunlight.
Railway crossings.
Old houses climbing up the hills.
And sunsets that make everything glow.

Somehow, it reminded me of the worlds I’ve seen in Makoto Shinkai’s films. 🌅

And the best part?

I wasn’t really looking for one particular landmark.

The town itself was what I came to find.

This is Onomichi. 🇯🇵

Have you ever visited a place that somehow felt familiar, even though you’d never been there before?

Tell me where. I might go looking.

The various Shoyu ramen I've tried while travelling across Japan. Posting about them makes me want to visit all the prefectures all over again.

🍜 Like the comics? I turned my ramen journey into collectible stickers so that you can wear your ramen obsession like a badge! If you're the kind of person who judges a bowl by its broth shine, stick 'em on your laptop, helmet, or flask. ➡️ Link in bio to visit my online store.

Save a day for Onomichi. 🇯🇵

Not every day in Japan needs a packed itinerary.

Sometimes, breakfast by the port, a walk through an old shopping street, a little ice cream, a ropeway ride, and pudding before heading home are more than enough.

That’s what I love about Onomichi.

A small hillside town by the Seto Inland Sea, where you can simply eat, wander, explore, and let the day unfold at its own pace.

And yes, you can do it as a day trip from Osaka.

Would you save a day for this?

Lost my heart in Onomichi 🌸💕

This seaside town sits between Hiroshima and Okayama and is still so underrated in my opinion 🥹 The contrast between the old townscape of Onomichi and the cherry blossoms is truly magical.

I loved Onomichi so much that I spontaneously came back a few days later to spend another few nights here. It's a quiet and peaceful town, a welcome change from the crowds in Osaka or even Kyoto!

What to do in Onomichi:

🌸 Take the ropeway up to Senkoji Temple
🌸 Walk down the Bungaku no Komichi path and read passages from Japanese authors
🌸 Enjoy the cherry blossom festival on top of Senkoji Park
🌸 Walk down cat alley and get some cat shaped treats
🌸 See the panoramic view of Onomichi from the Senkoji Peak Observatory at sunset
🌸 stay more than one day? Take a ferry ride to Ikuchijima Island and visit Kosanji Temple
🌸 eat vegan curry at Cafe Aozora or Suisse, both very good!
🌸 most important: cuddle all the cats along the way

How to get to Onomichi: 1hr by train from Hiroshima or 2hrs from Osaka/Kyoto

Where to stay: I absolutely loved my stay at @beacon.onomichi Hotel Beacon Onomichi on top of the train station!

Nothing in Japan is really that far away due to the bullet train being SO good, but it's still a few hours to Onomichi. Totally worth it though, from the friends I've made to the abundance of actually really fun things to do (looking at you @onomichi_museum).

Also with this being a port town, you know you get some of the best cuisine you'll have in Japan. Fully recommend if you want to visit somewhere different to the obvious bigger cities.
