Of course we had to hop on this trend… but with a little piece of Colchester history! 🏛️🐒

Long before it became home to Three Wise Monkeys, our beautiful building at 60 High Street was home to Parr’s Bank, which opened a branch here in 1899.
Over 125 years later, the building continues to be part of Colchester’s story, now bringing people together over independent beer, great food and live entertainment.

We love being part of a city with so much history, and even more, getting to give one of its historic buildings a new chapter 🤍

The beginning of a new tradition in Colchester! 🦪🏆

The Golden Oyster Award has officially launched, celebrating the quality, creativity and dedication that make our city’s independent food and drink scene so special. To have Three Wise Monkeys chosen as the very first recipient is an incredible privilege, and one we’re truly grateful for!

We’re delighted to see an initiative that gives local hospitality businesses the recognition they deserve, and even more honoured to have been part of its very first celebration. A huge thank you to everyone involved for allowing us to mark this special milestone together. Here’s to many more local businesses receiving the recognition they deserve! ❤️🍻

This is your LAST CHANCE to take a full tour of Jumbo, so book now!

With the huge hoarding going up and preparation underway for the transformation of Colchester’s favourite landmark, we need to restrict access to the site from the end of this month.

Why not make this half term unforgettable with a family tour of Jumbo?

The work on Jumbo will take up to two years and we don’t want anyone to miss out on the chance to see this heritage gem before building starts, so we have put on extra tours for half term week.

You don’t have to come with children, adult visitors are welcome too. You’ll see inside the famous water tank, discover how Jumbo saved lives for 100 years and see the incredible views from 40.2m above the city.

We have afternoon tours on Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25, plus daily tours Tuesday to Friday of half term week. We also have tours on Saturday, October 31. You can book at jumbo.org.uk but places are strictly limited.

Children must be at least eight years old and accompanied by an adult. Please read the full health and safety notes and disclaimer on the website before you book.

Banksy Exhibition, @theminories. I had the opportunity to visit the Banksy @banksy exhibition at The Minories in @visitcolchester @colchester_press this week. A well curated exhibition of 28 of his original works, including two large pieces created by the artist as part of his ‘Great British Spraycation’ tour of East Anglia in 2021. The piece entitled Sandcastle Boy was painted on location in London Road North, Lowestoft Suffolk. I had the opportunity to see this piece in its original location, before it was dismantled, along with the other three works created by Banksy in the town.

Banksy’s street art uses techniques which deliver sharp, modern political messages thorough a highly visual strategy. Drawing on the work of the Art Historian Erwin Panofsky’s (1939) theory of iconographic analysis, reveals how Banksy uses familiar cultural symbols to communicate complex themes through subversive imagery.

David Freedberg’s theories on the power of images (1989), illustrates why Banksy’s work elicits such intense reactions in the public sphere by both the public and those in authority. His images possess an inherent agency that triggers an emotional and behavioural response. The power of his images frequently provokes immediate physical intervention, by engaging directly within public spaces and as in the case of the images in Lowestoft, provoke immediate preservation, vandalism and most often removal by authorities or the owners of the walls.

The exhibition is well worth a visit, a unique opportunity to view and appreciate his work in a local setting. The Exhibition continues until the 28th of February 2027.
