The WWII Pilot Who Chose Mercy Over a Kill | Charlie Brown & Franz Stigler Description December 20, 1943: A badly damaged American B-17 bomber was barely surviving over Germany when German Luftwaffe pilot Franz Stigler pulled alongside it. He had every reason—and the opportunity—to shoot it down. Instead, he chose mercy. Pilot Charlie Brown, only 21 years old, was flying a crippled B-17 with severe damage, while Stigler was just one victory away from earning the prestigious Knight’s Cross. Rather than fire, Stigler escorted the bomber toward safety, saluted, and disappeared into the sky. Nearly 47 years later, the two pilots finally met. What began as a moment of mercy in the chaos of World War II became a lifelong friendship. Sometimes courage isn't about pulling the trigger. Sometimes it's knowing when not to. What would you have done? #CharlieBrown #FranzStigler #WWII #WorldWarII #WW2History
