The flood came without rain.

August 26, Bhote Koshi gorge, on the Nepal–Tibet border.
No storm. No downpour. The water was made of ice.

An ice-and-rock avalanche came off the mountain high above
and sealed the tributary below, ponding a lake behind it.
Then that ice barrier let go.

A concrete dam warns you. It cracks, it seeps, it leaks.
An ice barrier gives you nothing.
The moment water crosses the top it starts cutting itself,
and the faster it cuts, the faster the water moves.
It doesn't fail gradually. It fails all at once.

This valley had spent generations preparing for monsoon rain.
That day, no rain fell.

⚠️ This is a 3D visualization made to explain the mechanism β€”
not real footage. The cause follows preliminary assessments
from ICIMOD and Kathmandu University; the investigation is
ongoing and the toll is still being updated.

Most people think Hoover Dam holds back the Colorado River with sheer weight. It doesn't.

The dam is curved β€” bulging upstream so the water's push runs along the arc and into the canyon walls instead of fighting the concrete head-on. Like a stone arch overhead, the harder it's pushed, the tighter it locks.

But curing concrete makes its own heat. Poured as a single mass, this 3-million-cubic-yard pour would have needed 125 years to cool, cracking itself apart in the process.

So engineers poured the dam in 215 separate blocks, each threaded with steel pipe β€” 582 miles of it, more than a round trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles β€” and ran ice water through them until the concrete cooled evenly. The pipes were then filled with grout and sealed inside the dam, where they remain today.

Hoover Dam came in more than two years ahead of schedule. Ninety years later, it's still holding back Lake Mead β€” by borrowing the water's own force.

The new Roadster hopped over a semi truck, and Musk brought a live crowd so nobody could call it AI.
The trick: a fan sucks it onto the ramp, then cold compressed air pushes it off the ground. No fuel, no wings.
It only flies in short bursts, production is set for 2028, and reserving the thruster version costs $250,000.

Would you pay $250K for a car that can hop over traffic?

On Oct 14, an 8-inch water main broke under a Los Feliz street in Los Angeles. No one was hurt, but about 30 homes lost water.
The road didn't crack first. Water washed the soil out from below until the asphalt had nothing left to stand on.
Over 30% of LA's water mains are 80+ years old, and the US sees about 240,000 main breaks a year.

Have you ever seen water coming up through the pavement on your street?

New York's water arrives by gravity, but that push only reaches about six floors.
So pumps fill a wooden tank on the roof, and gravity carries the water back down to every faucet.
No nails, no glue: just cedar boards, steel hoops, and wood that swells until it seals itself.
Have you ever noticed these on New York rooftops?

#NewYork #NYC #Manhattan #Engineering #Shorts

Notes: Estimates of how many rooftop tanks remain range from about 10,000 to 15,000. Lifespan estimates vary from about 25 to 35 years or more depending on exposure. "Over 40 tons" = a typical 10,000-gallon tank Γ— 8.34 lb per gallon (β‰ˆ 83,400 lb). Manhattan's median apartment sale price was about $1.25–1.28 million in mid-2026.

Time zones give Santa about 32 hours on Christmas Eve. That's still nearly 800 homes every second.
At 630 miles a second, his sleigh would outrun sound 3,000 times over, and every 2-pound gift would hit with the energy of 100+ tons of TNT.
And no, relativity won't keep him young: all night, it buys him less than one second.
Would you still sneak downstairs on Christmas Eve?

#Santa #ChristmasEve #NorthPole #Physics #Shorts

Math notes: Household and kid counts (91.8 million homes, 378 million kids) come from the famous 1990 Santa calculation credited to Spy magazine, not current census data. We re-ran it for a 32-hour night (10 p.m. local in UTC+14 to 6 a.m. in UTCβˆ’10): 91.8M Γ· 115,200 s β‰ˆ 797 homes/s; homes spread over Earth's land sit ~0.79 mi apart β†’ ~630 mi/s (~1,010 km/s), ~3,000Γ— the speed of sound. 378M gifts Γ— 2 lb = 378,000 tons, more than the Empire State Building's 365,000 tons. Reindeer pull ~2Γ— body weight (~540 lb) β†’ ~1.4 million reindeer. Time dilation at that speed over 32 h β‰ˆ 0.66 s. A 2-lb gift at that speed carries ~4.7Γ—10ΒΉΒΉ J β‰ˆ 111 tons of TNT.

The USS Abraham Lincoln just returned to San Diego after 321 days away, including a record 265 straight days at sea.
Below the water, an electric current protects its hull. Above it, only paint does, so the rust shows up at the waterline.
A retired Navy captain estimates about 30 days of work to clear it.
Rust bucket, or just what 10 months at sea looks like?

#USSAbrahamLincoln #SanDiego #Navy #Engineering #Shorts

Notes: The viral rust photos were taken in Laem Chabang, Thailand, on the way home in September 2026; the hull was partly washed there before the ship returned to San Diego on Oct. 8, 2026. "Cosmetic" is retired Vice Adm. Robert Murrett's description (Newsweek).

Lake Mead just hit a record low, less than 3 ft above the line where 12 of Hoover Dam's 17 turbines get shut off.
Below 1,035 ft, the dam drops to under a fifth of its peak power, with the lake still about a quarter full.
Upstream, water sent down from Lake Powell was cut 20% to protect Glen Canyon Dam. Even last weekend's record Las Vegas rain barely moved the lake.

Is it fair to drain one lake to save another?

Visuals are illustrations. 1,035 ft β‰ˆ 315 m.

A rider was thrown from Goliath at Six Flags Over Georgia, near Atlanta. He did not survive.
Six Flags closed nine similar coasters at six parks while investigators look for the cause.
Officials haven't confirmed what went wrong. Goliath holds riders with one lap bar β€” no shoulder harness, no seat belt.

Should a 200-ft coaster rely on a lap bar alone?

Rest in peace, Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem β€” IT manager, technology teacher and robotics coach at Wesley International Academy for 12+ years.

The Flatiron Building's front is about six feet wide β€” 22 stories on a corner you could almost touch with both arms.
Broadway's diagonal left a sliver of land, and critics said the wind would knock it down. Burnham hung it on a steel skeleton instead.
124 years later, its offices are becoming homes β€” one floor was listed at $58.5 million.

These Long Beach homes didn't fall β€” the sand under them left. 13 homes are now red-tagged as unsafe to enter.
The swell came from a storm off Mexico and slipped through a gap in the city's breakwater β€” the third storm in six weeks.
El Niño pushed the sea up to 1.5 ft above predicted tides, and each wave's backwash dragged sand from under shallow foundations.
