Presto a Tunisi <3 https://www.artribune.com/editoria/2026/09/intervista-simona-squadrito-antigruppo/

IN CONVERSATION: STUDIO ABRA AND ZOLFO ROSSO – PERSPECTIVES ON CONTEMPORARY ART 🗣️

An intense and productive debate was recently held in Venice at @terzospazio_zolforosso Santa Croce, bringing together two significant independent art collectives: @_studio_abra from Turin and @zolforossovenezia . AICA Italia was there to actively participate, driven by our firm belief in the urgent need to give contemporary artists a voice and shine a spotlight on the systemic challenges they face.

A crucial takeaway emerged from the meeting: the absolute necessity for greater accountability from both the local community and political leadership. Temporary or superficial spaces are no longer enough; artists require concrete, structural, and financial support to successfully develop and execute their projects within the city.

A central highlight of the debate was a comparison of the cultural landscapes and artistic ecosystems of Turin and Venice.

These two deeply contrasting cities—one with an industrial heritage repurposed into a powerful creative network, and the other a global epicenter for art grappling with its own unique local complexities—offered invaluable insights into how we can rethink cultural policies and build mutual support networks among artists.

As an institution, our commitment remains to amplify these demands, ensuring that the constructive proposals and voices of the independent art scene do not go unheard by policymakers and local communities.

A special thank you to both collectives and all the attendees for this fundamental moment of shared growth and collective reflection.

A heartfelt tribute and profound homage are dedicated today to the memory of @henribeaufour, the distinguished French artist who passed away in 2025. Renowned for a rigorous creative trajectory centered upon the plasticity of matter, Beaufour distinguished himself as an instinctive sculptor prior to channeling his vision into painting. His expressive output—characterized by a raw, visceral intensity—attained its highest synthesis through the deliberate distortion of self-portraiture and compelling sculptural works such as the bronze "Le Centaure". His legacy remains enshrined in pivotal monographic milestones, notably "Expression" in Forte dei Marmi and the Venetian exhibition "Portraits imaginaires". He choosed Massa, in Tuscany, as the Place to live and create. The current visual inquiry of Chiara Calore resonates profoundly with the artistic idiom of this master. Her latest works are currently unveiled in the exhibition "Tutte le Creature abitano il confine" (All Creatures Inhabit the Border, September 5 – 27, 2026). The vernissage of the exhibition project, held at the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa within the historic Palazzetto Tito in Venice, was attended by Gabriele Romeo, President of AICA Italy, and Vito Ancona, member of the Strategy Commission. The exhibition underscores the evolutionary path of the young artist, whose academic foundation at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice is significantly augmented by a profound technical expertise derived from the discipline of art restoration. Already distinguished by prestigious accolades, including the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa residency fellowship and a solo exhibition at Galleria Giovanni Bonelli, Calore presents a body of work (featuring the recent canvas "Abisso") wherein meticulous pictorial detail coexists with indeterminate spatial expanses. Her oneiric iconography of human-nature hybridization engages—through stylistic counterpoint and shared urgency—with the immediate physicality and evocative power inherent to Beaufour’s sculptures. "Le Centaure".

The Algorithmic Will: The Shipwreck of Consciousness at Palazzo Diedo 🌑 @berggruendiedo

Inaugurated today in Venice, Strange Rules (curated by Dryhurst, Herndon, and Obrist) is not merely an exhibition, but a spatial paradox. It marks a radical shift towards ‘Protocol Art’—a regime where art ceases to be a vision and becomes a system of control.

Painting as the Veil of Maya 👁️
Through a Husserlian lens, we witness a digital epoché. The canvases of Avery Singer and the machine-vision of Trevor Paglen suspend the sensible world to reveal a purely algorithmic intentionality. This is Schopenhauer’s new “Veil of Maya”: a synthetic, blind Will that processes reality by stripping it of human subjectivity.

A Fabula Under Embargo 💣
Beneath the code, the debris of a lost era surfaces. In the works of Ho Tzu Nyen and Ayoung Kim, the narrative shatters into parcellised elements. Bombs, child-heroes, and military commanders emerge as digital detritus—pixels of a violated collective memory. These are data points of a humanity struggling to reconstruct itself under an “embargoed” era that catalogues everything but redeems nothing.

Time as an Algorithm ⏳
Time ceases to be a lived duration. In the installations of Philippe Parreno, Agnieszka Kurant, and Lynn Hershman Leeson, the present is a computational parameter. The transcendental ego vanishes, replaced by an aesthetics of “nolition,” where the individual is but a terminal in a synchronised data stream.

Critical Assessment: Beauty or Theorem? ⚖️
Strange Rules is an operation of crystalline intelligence, yet it remains hauntingly cold. It celebrates a bloodless perfection—an impeccable fabula that poses a brutal question: are we still the architects of our own perception, or have we become passive spectators of an algorithm?Palazzo Diedo holds up a mirror to our age: between the bombs and the code, is there any room left for the human spirit?

From the exhibition “STRANGE RULES”, curated by Mat Dryhurst, Holly Herndon & Hans Ulrich Obrist with Adriana Rispoli — Palazzo Diedo / Berggruen Arts & Culture @berggruendiedo

Avery Singer
1987, United States
Vanessa, 2026

In Vanessa (2026), Avery Singer casts the poker player as a defining figure of the contemporary condition: a subject trained to recognise invisible patterns, calculate uncertainty, and act within systems governed by risk.
Moving beyond the animation software associated with her earlier practice, Singer employs open-source and AI-driven tools to source and process imagery drawn from post-2001 military conflicts. Rather than functioning as documentary references, these fragments become embedded within the painting’s structure itself — residual traces of violence that persist beneath the surface of everyday visual culture.
Singer’s engagement with artificial intelligence is neither illustrative nor neutral. By outsourcing parts of the image-making process to algorithmic systems — including the generation of prompts and associative pathways — she exposes the instability of authorship in an era increasingly mediated by automated perception. The work asks not only how images are produced, but how reality itself is filtered, prioritised, and consumed.
Hovering between surveillance, warfare, and simulation, Vanessa reflects a world in which visibility has become inseparable from computation, and where intuition now operates alongside prediction models, probability, and machine logic.
Among the earliest events anticipating the opening of the Biennale di Venezia.
