One of the coolest Thai 🇹🇭 dining experiences in Hell’s Kitchen @vivthainyc — the Khao Tom set is made for sharing and you can choose steamed jasmine rice or rice porridge, then pick two entrees to pair with it 🤤 and definitely try their appetizers, specialty dishes and don’t skip their cocktails, because they partnered with Bangkok’s legendary @maha.niyom.bkk to bring the best to NYC!

I’ve always liked finding Thai restaurants that show a different side of the cuisine, and ViV Thai @vivthainyc is doing exactly that 👾

After 17 years on 9th Avenue, ViV has been completely reimagined with a Thai Modernism design - think terrazzo floors, warm wood, bold details, and a golden dragon overhead, creating a space that shifts from refined daytime dining into a more energetic Bangkok-inspired nightlife atmosphere 🌙

But the part I was most excited to try was the Khao Tom Experience. This centers around Khao Tom Gu, a comforting Thai rice porridge that becomes the base for a spread of flavorful, fiery sides. Instead of treating rice soup as just a starter, ViV turns it into a whole social dining ritual where you build your bowl with different dishes to mix and match 🧩

I love that this is something you don’t see in every Thai restaurant in NYC. It feels rooted in Thai food culture while still fitting perfectly into the late-night energy of Hell’s Kitchen. Between the new look, regional Thai flavors, cocktails, and the Khao Tom Feast, ViV Thai feels like a completely new chapter for a longtime NYC Thai restaurant 🌶️

Khao tom: Thai rice soup. It's classic Thai comfort food - and Chef Verasak Sangsiri (@iamchefve) has built an entire meal option around it at @vivthainyc. The Khao Tom Feast starts with the base: a riceberry porridge, infused with Pandan (or you could be boring and just get white rice). This is not congee: the rice grains are more intact, swimming in broth. You eat the rice with more intensely-flavored dishes, so the meal is about what you order with it, and how you share those dishes.

We thoroughly enjoyed all of it. Here's our menu:
- Crispy pork belly stir-fried with garlic, fresh chili, and scallions
- Steamed pork meatball in black pepper sauce with garlic & onions, with salted egg yolk.
- Crispy fried duck eggs dressed with onion, celery, chili & lime dressing
- Manila clams stir-fried with roasted chili paste, garlic & Thai basil
- Morning glory stir-fried over high heat with salted fish

Every dish is nice and the combo of big flavors is wonderful. The rice bowl cleanses. Thai tea is sweet. Fun!

I remember khao tom as a late night Bangkok thing, communal eating, Chinese-Thai style to end a night out. It started that way at ViV too, but the ViV team just renovated after 17 years here and decided to run it the Khao Tom day, every day. Amazing news: you can now come in and eat this fabulous feast as lunch! It's terrific. I'm a big fan.

I’ve been in the trenches with final touches on the novel recently, but this week I decided to take a mental break & go to a cocktail party. I’m in a taxi, looking out the window, feeling free, thinking about Viv, my protagonist, and how she hasn’t let go of my brain for years now, and this restaurant flashes by. @vivthainyc ! Viv won’t even let me take a break from thinking about her for an evening. Wait till you meet her in May… #thatslife #thewritinglife #singledesperateugly #amediting #singlit
